Is there sheet metal directly under the dashpad? I want to screw a tach on the far driver's side of the dashpad. 1984 gmc k1500 any pictures? Are there any wires that I could accidently screw into?

There's a metal backer but it's really thin. Unless you screw it all the way into the dash under the pad, it probably won't hold. But I wouldn't do that, personally.
You'd be better off drilling holes and nut&bolting it.

all you need to do is put a screw into the pad itself and use a washer under the head so when you tighten it, it wont go through

How would I hold the nut? Wouldn't I have to take out the dashpad completely?

Not completely. Remove the screws from the top of the IP bezel, remove the screws from above the glove box and you can lift it up enough to get a hand under.

One way and you hit the speaker hole , the other and you hit the gauge cluster . You could like I did by bending a bracket and using a bezel hole . Or bend the bracket over the top of dash instead :thumb:
