I have been mentally making a list of parts I could use on a very short wheelbase 4x4 project. I knew I had the SM465 and Dana 20 out of my 70 K5 and I also have a Scout Dana 300 behind a T19. I started thinking how cool it would be to swap the 20 for the 300 and get the lower gearing. When I dug up the 465/20 I was surprised to see about 7 inches of adaptor between them. I stared at it for a long time and still don't see why they did it. The T19/300 is way shorter and looks less likely to break. Can anyone explain why Chevy stretched out the combination?

only reason i can think of is for front driveshaft length.the 465 is about 4.5" shorter than the th350 and using a shorter adapter would probably cause u-joint issues.the 465-205 adapter is pretty long as well.

That makes some sense except I thought the use of the CV joint would compensate for the shorter driveshaft. Were auto and manual front driveshafts the same length?

I'd bet they were, but I don't know. I don't know why the spacer is there either, but my guess was going to be that it was to make all of the transmissions the same length.

maybe we can get someone to give us some measurements?

I swapped mine from a 350 to a 465. The adapter is longer on the manual so the overall length was almost exactly the same. My stock driveshafts worked great until all the extra lift/1 tons I just did recently.:thumb:
