I tried and search "XJ" and it doesn't give me anything. I have moved from a XJ into the burby and I am with a Jeep Cherokee XJ club. What's with this mod? Are there any write-ups or pics?

get one.

clean and lube it up.

unbolt stock rag joint c/k truck shaft. and toss it.

bolt in xj shaft in place and mark 1 hole on end of steering colume for jeep shaft pinch bolt grove to notch . then bolt in for good and get rid of rag joint we have on our trucks .

thats the basic of it.

why spend 200+ bucks on u-joint shaft when jeep shaft out of junk yards for under 20 bucks. :waytogo:

ACK, not a paid member till next week. will have to look at link then. Thanks guys.

So take everything off the gearbox leaving just the splined shaft that goes into the box and grab an XJ shaft clamp to clamp and use that?

Does this improve steering by eliminating the "sponginess" of that donut bushing?

yep. but some early year gm trucks used diffrent input spline size and steering shaft end on colume. what year you got ?

I have a 91 Suburban 1500

I just talked with a friend of mine that recently started an XJ salvage and repair business and I might have a decent supply of these things. There are never needed for XJs so they just sit there.

I was curious about this as well, what is the ideal year for the shaft itself? Iv heard with certain years you have to cut and weld and yada yada, which is fine, but if there is a year that just actually bolts right in I would prefer that instead....

Gunna bump this, even though it's chasing it's own tail. Folks need to search XJ Shafts or XJ mod, under "titles only".

Anyway, I've removed my share of Jeep shafts and came across one I've never seen. Grand Cherokee's have much shorter, fatter shafts. But this Cherokee looked like all the other ones, but was surprised to find it different. Maybe this is the year split, yet same body style? :dunno:

Well the XJ in the pic is a '97-'01 with the 4.0 IL6 Automatic with ABS and AC.

There were a ton of changes in the 96 and 97 years. Odds are 84-86 wont work as that was when AMC owned Jeep and they had the chevy 2.8 in the XJs and nothing was where it should have been.

87-90 was the Renix motor years under Chrysler
91-95 was the 4.0HO Chrysler
96 was 4.0HO but with the old body style yet with OBDII
97-01 was the body upgrades with same 4.0HO and some misc upgrade through those years.
2001 was last year of XJ.

Most common you will find in yards (if any) will be the 87-95s.

eww
it's a bastard child
I'm not fooled by many jeeps, knowing which will work and which wont, this one got me though. Maybe cause the grill was missing, dunno

this sounds like a great idea,so i am assuming this improves steering response,or is it just more durable??

One of the best cheap upgrades you can do. Taken the old one out of a jeep is easy, just unbolt from the steering box and from the top of the shaft, go inside the jeep and unbolt the steering column, put both feet on dash and pull.

To get the new one in your Blazer, youll have to put a small notch in the top portion where the steering shaft connects so you can get the pinch bolt thru.

Also, unless you take your column apart, youll have to collapse the XJ shaft. Its easy to do. there is two lil holes that have a plastic insert, you could either punch those out, drill em out or just force it closed.

my 1990 k5 drives very well now,but always felt the steering could be better, this sounds like the thing i will be doing:waytogo::waytogo:

maybe its just me, but my k5's steering feels great with the stock shaft.

If it ever gives me trouble ill do the switch, but as of now its good.

It is just nice on how cheap it is, plus the ragjoint is a pos. I have had problems with the top square u-joint thing coming apart, and that leads to major problems. For 10$ (what I got mine for) and 15min it was a nice piece of mind and it looks alot nicer too.
