I'm in the market for one, as it's quickly becoming another neccessity.

I've been borrowing one from a friend...
But, that's getting old.

I normally buy DeWalt power tools, but refuse to have a giant Yellow eyesore in my garage.

:haha:

I used to buy Craftsmen hand tool's, but now that their stuff's made in China...

What say the brotherhood...? :dunno:

i've found the saw doesnt matter as much as getting a decent blade.

i run a cheapy northern tools unit and usually run a cheap hf blade. but there are really nice blades available if you want to make a good cut and spend the money.

My buddy's in the pipe fitter's union.
So, I'm kinda spoiled when it comes to borrowing tools. :pimp:

I'm sure he has the best blades money can buy, cuz they cut like buttah. :thumb:

Looks like I'll be investing in some really nice blades... :D

IIRC when I went and bought mine not to long ago, I looked at Dewalt. I found that they were not a compound miter though. I went with the Ridgid only for that reason and have used it a bit so far and like it.

Band saws are better. I used my chop saw once in three years and sold it. Used it the one time just to try it out. My band sawe is my work horse. No sparks to worry about directing away from flammable items, no massive hot narly bur at the bottom of the cut.

I have said this before about this dicussion, try cutting a piece of allthread with a chop saw, then thread a standard nut onto it right after cutting it. You more then likely will not be able to, or you'll burn your hand, or cut your hand. Now a good port-a-band saw or basic band saw with a good blade, will easily cut the allthread and you will easily be able to thread a standard nut right on to the allthread.

For quick & dirty fabbing where it don't matter and your just trying to get something bolted up thats a nice benifit. Oh, and usually when i bans saw blade breakes it scares you and thats about it. A cut off wheel breaks and shrapnel goes ripping all over the place. Far more dangerous.

I agree with that. I'm trying to get a port a band with one of the swag offroad mounts. Looks to be way more practical. And after using a dewalt portaband with the adjustable speed. Turn the blade speed down and cuttin even thick stuff is such a non event it's crazy

I have cut 5" aluminum round stock with my cheepy HF type vert/horz band saw. Lets see an abrasive saw do that. No can do. :D versitility is super important too. Abrasive saw is for steel only. Stainless ruins an abrasive blade.

i bought the cheapest 14" Rigid they had at homo depot, $175.. i'd say more important than brand, is making sure ya go for a 14 over a 12...

it's been INVALUABLE... but I still want a horizontal bandsaw real bad...

I would say a portaband would be the better choice, you can get stands that make em into a chop saw type item, alot more versatile overall and can still be used as a chop saw.

More expensive for sure

Who makes the one with a chopping motion? I haven't seen that yet.

I found it but its only for a porter cable bandsaw :doah: I know I have seen them for other ones, but its been a while, less popular items sometimes get put by the way side.

Woudn't be too hard to build I don't think,

Drill, grinder, welder and a portaband you could build dang near anything and not spend thousands of dollars on cut off wheels

If I didn't ask before, which I think I may have, what kind of deals can he/you get for us! :dunno: Never hurts to ask right? :D :waytogo:

Idk lol. He gets a discount for himself that I dont know of how much nor do I know if he could buy stuff and sell it like that. If they found out he would prolly get in trouble..... :dunno:

But we did build a nice press out of the "scrap" channel he snagged from work. Holes were off tolerance by a hundred thou... lol
