A little Update

A little update on the Tahoe:

She's been killing it all winter long with this crazy snow that we had. I really can't complain. The only problems that came up were a bad EGR valve (replaced under warranty) and a ABS sensor.

I decided to have a little fun with her today, perhaps too much:

The pictures don't do the amount of muck underneath it any justice. I spent close to $20 at the coin-op and then an additional hour once I got home hosing off the under body. This truck has a lot more stuff underneath it for the thick slop to stick to. I will say this though, the truck is a pig and is looowwww. Bottomed out a bunch of times, ripped the trailer plug bracket off, and ripped some plastic fasteners out of the lower front valence. This was terrain that back in the day I wouldn't have a single problem getting through/over it with my K10. I guess I need to remember that even with the crank and the tires it was still only intended to ferry the kids to soccer practice...

Speaking of the tires, this is the first time I got to try them in any serious mud. I'll say that they aren't quite as good as the MTZs on the K10, but if you keep the wheel speed up they stay clean and pull through. Unless you deal with a lot of muck, I'd still recommend them for a mild wheeler/daily driver. Next time though I need to remember to pull the ABS fuse because coming off the throttle and hitting the brakes just makes the ABS go crazy and you don't stop. :eek1::doah:

The Tahoe just rolled over 190k miles which puts me at a bit of a cross roads with it again. Do I put any money into it and keep driving it for a few more years, or sell it now while I could still get some money for it and get something a newer with less miles.

You see the rear end is sagging a bit and want to change the rear springs out to the Z71 coils which are a slightly higher weight capacity and net a 1/2-3/4" lift without changing the ride quality. I already have the springs in hand so its just finding the time to do them.
Also I found a conversion kit that replaces the torsion bars and front shocks with a small coilover. Everyone that's done it says it drives and handles like a different truck. I always have said it rides like your living room and well, it handles like one too. So hopefully this would make the truck more fun to drive.

Am I crazy for even considering doing this on my high mileage daily driver? A lot of people think so... But what's your guys' take?

for me, I just keep the maintenance up on it and do little things here or there to keep it enjoyable. My 02 Tahoe is at 225K+ and I know it's history since day one so IMO it's worth more to me than anyone else.

Has anyone had any issues running that setup? I'm not sure I would trust that setup since it utilizes the upper/lower mounting points designed for a shock, not the weight of a vehicle :dunno:
I've been watching the threads closely and no one has reported any problems with the frame or lower control arms. The lower control arms are designed to carry the weight from the factory and the frame reinforcements seem ample. Although I'm not sure people are jumping their trucks off road with these but I do know people are using them at the track.

For a high mileage DD, don't fix it if it ain't broke.

No reason for the suspension upgrades. Drive the hell out of it, keep enjoying it, and sink your money elsewhere.

imo the miles are already to high to get any decent $ out of it.
Keep it and drive it til the wheels fall off.
In the mean while save up for a replacement.

Once it finally is drivin into the ground you have a LS block for the K10 swap you convent so much....

The lower arms are designed to carry the weight of the vehicle but not at the shock mounting point they're using. Not trying to argue about it, just pointing out the facts.

Personally I wouldn't put my family in a rig with that setup. The OE IFS really is best left alone and pretty close to stock or it falls apart.

I would agree, at that mileage, you may as well keep going. You know the vehicle, you like it, it works. No point in buying something else till this one is done.

Decision Time

I came to this decision today after visiting my local dealer. I went in a few days ago and they had some nice used 07-13 trucks but they just didn't "wow" me like my Tahoe did when I first saw it. They called me back in today as they got a, '11 6.2L truck on the lot since I mentioned that is something that I was looking for. This truck had everything that I was looking for as far as options, configuration, mechanicals, color, and especially the 6.2L. The salesman prefaced the truck as needing work. He tallied up the list: ball joints, wheel bearings, tranny cooler lines, brake job, and oil change. Now mind you the truck had 54k miles. :eek1: After hearing that and seeing the condition of the truck with more scratches in the paint and wear and tear on the interior than my current Tahoe, I just know the thing was beat on hard and not cared for. That's too bad because on the test drive she definitely had some balls. IT wasn't quite like my 6.2L Camaro, but they are very different animals. I did like the truck but if the dealer dropped their price to reflect the abuse the truck had taken I might have considered it but they held strong at $31k + $3k in repairs. I couldn't leave fast enough.

So long story short, the Tahoe is here to stay for a while longer though I am going to keep my ear to the ground for another 6.2L out there somewhere. So in the spirit of keeping her I ordered some new speakers for her. :doah:

There's definitely something to be said about knowing that all my vehicles are paid for though :thumb:

Was afraid you were going to go for it. Glad you realized it was ridden hard and put away wet.

Sounds like you made the right call :waytogo:

Send me the 6.2. Problem solved. Ill even send you a low mileage 408 sbc free of charge
