Where did I go wrong?

One other thing to consider - you said that it barely made it through emissions............hmmm, is your system using an O2 sensor? My TPI setup (far from stock!) went through Oregon emissions like the damn motor was turned off it was so clean.........a good FI setup should have it run wayyyyyyyyyy cleaner than 'just passing emissions'. That and your 8 mpg make me wonder what is going on.

Yes the O2 sensor is located in the collector on the drivers side header. When I ran the MPFI on the stock engine, it gave me a lot better mileage and a good power boost. I know something is going on with the engine, I just cannot figure it out. One thing that bugged me about our testing center is that I had to run my fathers stock tires and wheels from his 3/4ton GMC. Those little things, and my tall gears didnt help matters any I am sure.

I am almost sure now that its the computer chip. I can see how it is trying to keep the engine running within a set limits and it will do whatever it can to keep it within those limits. My engine is far enough out of stock, that its a little confused. The one thing I dont understand, is that I dont get any codes from the computer saying something isnt right. I guess I need to change whatever I will change and then get a custom chip made.

Sorry man... email was down and didn't happen to check back to this post...Here is the head I'm refering to...

BTW, the head you mentioned, the "fuelie head" is not the one everyone is talking about. Thats old school stuff, and the Vortecs are a better head for most truck engines anyway. You'll be looking for later model heads I guess...

RE. the 454. Dual pipes with a catalytic converter on each pipe. That should be legal in all 50 states ( it was in California before I left). Yes, the way your engine works, there is a certain amount of back pressure, a slight amount, that is required for the engine to run optimumly (is that even a word?:). Something to do with sealing the combustion chamber, or something like that.

Federally illegal to slap duals (or even dual cats, or even one cat) on a vehicle not originally equipped that way, with a motor that wasn't set up that way. if the state will let you get away with it, no harm, no foul, but obviously trying to make a vehcle less polluting than stock is not allowed.

Thanks for the clarification. Here in Oklahoma, that is considered :-) Okie Dokie, lol. For all it's faults,Oklahoma isn't big on intruding too much on personal freedoms/rights.

It makes no sense to me why I cannot run two cats, but that’s the way the law reads. I figure if the cats, either single or dual, are sized correctly for the application, what’s the harm. But the law is the law.

What has been done to this transmission is that the solenoid is either always engaged or it has had a check ball placed in it. There are two signals to lock up a 700: hydraulic and electric. One or the other can be eliminated, but you usually will get the best overall performance from both unless you have a computer controlled one. Then just electric is enough.

I would guess that your converter is staying locked almost all the time in 3rd and 4th gear with this setup. The only time that valve shuts off is when you are shifting (3-4 or 4-3) or are on the gas hard (based on pressure from the TV). It probably drops the rpms way down when you hit the 2-3 shift, no? One bad thing about this setup is that the converter does not unlock when you hit the brake pedal.

I would love to run new Vortec heads, but I cannot afford to replace my entire Intake and MPFI system. I will either run with the GM heads that CC and Solo posted a link for, or I will get the Edelbrock heads.

I got a PM from a guy telling me I could run that Paxton Supercharger and not have to change anything I have already done. I dont know how true this is tho.

That is exactly correct. It fights the brakes. I have noticed that it seems to run a lot cooler, or at least thats what the tranny temp guage is telling me. Would this tranny mod cause a gas mileage and power problem? Dont get me wrong, my blazer will get up and go, when I ask it to, but I had wanted a little more from the engine I built.

You put a camshat that's not for a fuel injected engine in it. That's where you "went wrong."

The more the transmission is locked up, the cooler it will run. Most of the heat in an auto is generated in the torque converter. The slip makes heat. The more torque, the more slip and the more slip, the more heat. But it can't be locked up in first gear or else the engine would have to stall for you to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. The only way to get the 700 to lock up in 1st gear would be to have the hydraulic valve completely disabled (always a signal present) and then engage the solenoid at low speed. But if you are using the valve for lockup, it would take serious modifications to make it lock up in 1st (but who would ever do this?). With the ECM-controlled trucks, you can manually select it in any gear through the diagnostic port. If you feel that it is fighting the brake, it probably just has a torque converter with a lower stall speed than you used to have. This would also make the transmission run cooler.
