where to buy a GEN iii/iv engine?

Think you'd have to swap the computers, but thats easy. The rest should be the same.

I've found a guy locally here in SLC that will sell me everything I need for a 6.0 swap for $700, but he's having trouble finding one atm. he can do the same thing with a 5.3 for $500, so I'm kinda considering it.

the thing is, I really want a 6.0 and would hate to do everything twice. since the block sizes are the same, I'm assuming everything would bolt in the same, but what about the electronics? are all the electrical connections the same? would a 5.3 computer run a 6.0 engine? assuming of course I had it reprogrammed.

basically, the question is, could I yank out my 5.3 and slap in a 6.0 without having to change anything else other than reprogramming the computer?

It wouldn't even be a computer swap so much as a re flash.

HOWEVER, I think that you will have to pay specific attention to the years, and sensor compatibility. I don't know if you could end up with a wiring harness in the vehicle that uses one sensor that isn't the same from engine to engine. This would only really be the case if you made a big jump in years. 2000 to 2010 say.

so basically they are interchangeable so long as I keep the same year (or double check sensors)?

what about injectors and manifold etc? say I end up with a long block or close to it. could I swap the stuff from a 5.3 onto a 6.0?

sorry to keep asking hypothetical questions here, but I'm trying to decide where to go with this, and all my experience is with SBC's only.

of course, worse come to worst I'd have a 5.3 all set up for a swap that I'm sure I could sell to someone. :D

Think of the 4.8 to 6.0/LS series as the new small block.

It's all interchangeable to an extent. There are some compatibility things that come into play, I don't know how well a 5.3 intake will work on a 6.0 but it will bolt up and in theory work, injectors fuel rails etc are basically the same design just might be lesser flow. Each of the displacements has a bit different head and intake I think but Keep in mind that I put a LS6 intake on a truck 6.0. Just have to research and figure it out.

I would personally get a 6.0 as I think the 5.3 is the equivalent of the old 305. It does ok but it's just never going to be great.

Honestly this is why I have Pacific Fab on speed dial, they know what's up and have a good inventory.

thanks man. I was thinking the same thing with regards to the 305. I'm not in a hurry, there is plenty of other things my truck still needs, so I think I'll just hold out for a 6.0 for now. $500 is a great deal, but I don't see it going away any time soon, so no need to get jumpy.

of course there is always the possibility that I'll decide to blow my income tax return on a pacific fab engine and be done with it. :P

http://www.lkqonline.com, This outfit has multiple outlets, Denver, for instance, maybe one closer to you?

SA Design books has a nice swap book for the LS engine into hotrods & other car/trucks. They go through the swap and what donor engines to use and what are the pro's & con's of them. Would be well worth your time to get for less than $30 bucks.

5.3l

Don't knock the 5.3L motor. I had that in my old truck (2009 GMC Sierra) and it was a strong ass motor. That thing would get up and go when you mashed the pedal. If you can't find a 6.0 for cheap, I would highly suggest a 5.3. That's what I plan on doing to my next project when ever I have the money to buy one again.
