i need to replace the fuel pump in my new project (89 suburban 2500). My question is, do i replace the stock fuel pump in the tank, or upgrade to one mounted on the frame? if i stick with the in-tank one where's the best place to buy? if i do after market, i want to just mount it to the frame and not have to worry about it... not add a bunch of extra's to make it work (some pumps i have seen require adding lines for return and bypassing the factory return from the tbi)... i want to keep it simple

i like the inline one for the simple fact if it dies its alot easier then having to drop the tank, expecially if you are on the trail. though im one of those people who cut the access panel in the back so i can get at it easier.

i ran a inline on a s10 i had and mounted it directly under the drivers door in the frame rail. that way i could hear it pumping

External is not an upgrade, it's a downgrade.

Shell out the money for the replacement *delco* pump, replace it, and forget about it for another 100,000 miles.

Replace the intank pump. IMO it is the best way to go. Either AC Delco, or if you are planing future engine mods. Upgrade to a Walbro 195 0r 225 LPH intank pump.

The intank pump is a better design. There are two schools of thought here.
1) Buy the AC Delco because it will last
2) Buy a lifetime warranty pump because you won't have to pay again.

The decision for me is whether or not the vehicle has an access panel to get to the pump.

I bought a TRE performance pump and it had a year warranty and lasted that long. I talked to brian at TBI chips ( cause he made my chip ) and he told me to get one of his pumps or get a GM one for a 92 Z28 camaro 350 TPI motor. So I am going to the GM dealer now to get one.
I need 14 PSI and the original GM one only puts out 12 PSI.

I will post up part # when I get back.

The factory pump is good to about 14-15 psi but the TPI pump will do whatever you need beyond those numbers should you ever need to bump the pressure up.

Why go to the dealer and get raped? GM doesn't make the parts, just go to any parts store that sells AC Delco and they can sell you the pump from the Z28 for alot less than the dealer. Make sure you also buy a new "sock" for the pump.

Tank pre-filter SHOULD be included in the box if it's a Delco piece. Definitely open it up and check though.

The AC Delco # EP241
The GM dealer gives it to me for the same price that GM parts direct sells it for. It was cheaper than Napa had the Delphi pump for. Nobody carries GM parts around here, so thats why I made friends with the parts guy at the GM dealership.

Now tell us if it came with the "sock" (filter).

Thats bunk. :(

In any case, it does need replaced. I can't believe they'd sell a pump for that much money and then not give you a sock. Heck, bad sock could have caused the previous failure. Like replacing a transmission and not the torque converter.

Yeah but why give away something they could sell for more money. They weren't dumb about making money.

The strainer does not come with Walbro pumps either they charge an extra 6 bones for it. They dont include thye strainer because there are 3 diferent types for TBI. They cant include all 3 in the filter box. So they make you order the one for your application seperate. GM does the same thing. That way they only have to have 1 part number for the pump.

How bout making an access panel in the floor? I've done it before, with good results. SOME carmakers actually do that. Why they all don't is beyond my comprehension.:doah:

So i assume if there was an access panel it would be under the carpet in the rear of the burb? i got a delco pump from napa yesterday, along with the wiring harness and filter....
