i believe with the help of some guys on here i found out the problem.
does anyone know a place online or a store that i could pick up the fusible links that run in the wires from the starter to the alternator to the firewall?
it for a 85 sierra. I already looked at LMC's website without luck
i was going to try the dealership tomorrow, if they have it it will probrably cost an arm and a leg.
thanks for the help!

Most parts places should have a fusible link in with the fuses; you then just barrel-crimp it inline with the existing wire -- cutting out the existing fusible link, of course.

Yep, just about any parts stores will have them, we carry them at our store here in Fremont but since you're in San Jose try Winchester auto.

thanks for the help. i ran to the dealership afterwork and got it, $1 a foot.
it is a just a wire, i thought it would be the small black piece that is in line with the wire.

I got mine from Napa. Make sure that you got the right size wire.

IIRC you need 4 smaller than the wire carrying the load.

i.e. 14 gauge load - 18 gauge fusable link.
