On my '90, I cannot fit a new 35" spare (with air in it) in the stock location and still keep the rear seat. With a 33" spare it would just barely fit and had to be positioned just right but would still rub the tailgate and back of the seat.
I recently bought a fabtech flatmount and my 35'' lays down flat behind the backseat with room to spare. I would think that I could fit a 37'' back there if I didn't mind havivg to slam the tailgate shut /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I prefer the flat mount because it is very easily removed when you need to haul stuff around and I don't have to worry about my spare ripping the bumper off when I come down from orbit like you would with a swing out carrier. It would be extremely easy to make one too, I was just feeling lazy when I bought mine for $80. www.fabtechmotorsports.com/html/misc.html
I found a some bolts that are curved just a bit on the end. i drilled me a hole in the bed towards the cab and the curved part sits in there and the bolt goes through one of the holes in the tires. and i tighten the bolt and it holds it tight in an upright position nehing the cab. leaves most of bed free for haulign stuff around as needed.
