Where's the beef?

I don't really understand what you said. But to answer the best I can, I am a little over an hour north of Memphis. If I find some, I'll let you know.

the 1880 joint reads like 8 1/16" across cap to cap.

1410 1480 is 4 3/8" it looks like. ####edit woops####read it wrong

I know theres exact specs for joints and yolks. but these scales are more for putting next to a joint or yolk to identify an unknown quick and easy. not for precise specs.

If anyone noticed......the first pic I put up is a different ruler than the last 2. same scales different package.

Here's the beef:

It's a GWB (German Spicer) 390.65-.01 cardan shaft that's hooked up to one of the Cummins QSK60's in one of our tugboats. The U-joints are 10-7/16" cap to cap and the shaft is 8-5/8" diameter. It's about 38-1/2" long and weighs 475 lbs.

showoff :p::haha:

some of our headboats run big stuff like that... coupling (flange) bolts on those when ya can't get an impact in there suck... :mad:

Thats a great Cummins there... heavily used... what is that thing, 100 kw?

You're exactly right, it's a 100 kW. Those are probably my favorite generators on any of our boats but we also have several 4BT3.9 gensets and John Deere 4045 gensets.

Yeah, when you're running about 7300 ft-lbs of continuous torque for hours on end you need a pretty stout shaft. :D

It's all about reliability and safety...

I had to take 3 500 gal diesel tanks out of a 65' sportfish today... needless to say, it has a big hole where the cockpit was! :haha:

how big is that tug?

The Challenger is 104'x36' and draws about 13'. She also holds 92,000 Gallons of fuel and swings 84.6" diameter propellers. The most unique feature of this boat is that it has Rolls-Royce Z-drive thrusters which allow the vessel to apply maximum thrust in any direction.

We're actually building two additional Z-Drive tugs with MTU 16V4000 engines and those boats will have around 6610 HP (delivery should be next month for the first one). One crazy thing about those tugs is that they will actually have carbon fiber shafting from the engines to the drives (as well as 102" diameter propellers).

Here's a pic I took of the first tug before the launching:

If you're ever around the Corpus Christi area I'd be glad to show you around some of our boats.
