Which axles fit under a blazer without serious modification

so I am ready to weld perches and mount this sucker tomorrow. Just noticed the lug nut studs are bigger...your's the same? i hope i can buy the studs to match front and switch them out.

I found some chrome lug nuts for mine that used the same lug wrench even though the studs were bigger. Until that point, I had planned on switching my front lugs. Now it doesn't seem that important.

double suck - the fraking bigger lug nuts won't fit in the stock rim holes. I'm gonna have to drill out bigger lug nut holes on the rims. man I love all the little crapolla I am finding. And i thought I had read up on this pretty thoughly.

I am thinking of drilling out the front axle plates to match the rear, and make it the same stud and nuts front rear.

unless I can find a step down lug nut stud. if there isn't one i'm gonna invent it :)

plus it rained so no outdoor welding today. looks like my buddy is going to have torn down blazer in his driveway for his x-mas guests to see. told his wife it looks like the appalacia mountains or something.....

well, go the axle installed. next weekend is bleeding the brakes and figuring out the e-brake cables. I think I am going to pull the old ones off the 10 bolt. hope that works......

Just posting to provide a status update. I steel need to get some new shock mounts. I just used the old ones for now.

Nice upgrade. Mine still has the 3.73 gears, but I would like to go a little lower. Have you driven this yet? Any vibrations? The pinion looks a little high, but maybe that's just the camera angle. Anyway, whatever works.:waytogo:

No vibration works great! 5.13 gears are sweet! The thing moves around easily now. Step on the gas and the thing instantly moves!!

because I dont want to :D

Seriously though its main duty is towing but I do like to do a little light wheeling. 2nd gear at 55mph the rpms are up there but still ok.

When I went online to look for ring and pinion I see a few different sizes for a 14 bolt. 9.5inch 10.5inch 11.5inch Which is prefered and how do I tell which a particular axle has without removing the cover?

Guys I dont care about drum vs disks. I'll use whatever the axle comes with. I know disc brakes are better but I'm not concerned with having drums. My current rear axle has drums and it does fine. With disks I think you would need to get a propotioning valve. That's just more work I would avoid if possible.

Anything I should look out for when looking at axles?

hay i know that street! thats funny. my crew cab is currently parked where that van is in the picture. my in-laws live at the top of the hill right there.
i think i talked to you once about the bumper on my k5.

Ya I remember I still don't have a bumper, my boat was the one sitting out on the street all the time during the summer. I don't live over there anymore. Houses have gotten so cheap I had to buy one.

The blazer is just a toy and gives me something to do with my free time.

I am curious, i read most of the previous posts, and from what i gather in short, you were mainbly complaining that you couldn't tow your 4k lbs boat up a hill more than 55mph, in 2nd gear? running 4.56 gears?

How steep of hills are we talking about, and for how long?

Reason i ask, is i think it mainly has something to do with the "rush feeling" meaning you don't feel like you're getting anywhere, unless you're keeping up with traffic. When trucks are loaded down, they go up hills slow, it's just what they do.

I have 35" tires on my Burb, brand new motor, new trans, running a 14bff with 4.10 gears, just recently towed a fully loaded trailer with most of everything we own, out of Arizona, climbing some pretty steep hills, also the whole back of the Burb and the roof were also loaded to the max. Pretty sure it weighed more than 4k total, and still i ran in second gear, running 45-50 mph, running in the mid to high 3000 rpm range, don't remember right off, but it "pulled" just fine.

I'm thinking, and don't take this too personally, that you may need to relax alittle when driving and pulling heavy loads ;) :wink1:

BTW, not that it matters, i used to drive tractor/trailers long haul for quite some time, i guess i learned alittle patience while driving, as you notice, they also slow down on upgrades and drop several gears.

I also do agree though, that if it's primarily a tow rig, then yes, definately a larger rear diff, and maybe run a synthetic gear lube to handle the added heat from towing.

I dont know what the grade is but its pretty steep. Maybe a trucker from Oregon would know its 26 going up sylvan hill its probably a mile long. It wasn't that I wasn't going anywhere its that I could only make it up the hill in 2nd gear. If I shifted to 3rd the truck would progressively slow down!

once the gears break in I intend to drain and put synthetic oil in there.

I dunno, pulling some decent weight up a steep hill, this situation sounds pretty normal to me, but to each their own i guess

Seems rather silly to me I had a 98 V6 Tacoma that could pull it up the same hill doing 70 mph with ease.

My Range Rover could pull it up doing 100 if I wanted to. I don't expect it to match the Range Rovers capabilities but I would expect it to keep up with a 190 hp V6 Tacoma!!

I'll find out this summer when I tow the boat again. I'm hoping the axle swap and gear change resolves the problem.

What do you have for exhaust on that thing? i see from the pictures that the muffler is the original or a stock replacement, but what about the cat? does it have the stock pellet cat on it?
you said it has headers, but if the stock cat and muffler are on there, you are missing out on a descent power gain.
replacement high capacity cats are pretty cheap.
also, do you have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator?

Replaced the cat long time ago. No adjustable fuel pressure regulator. When I bought the thing the motor was soooo shot the old cat was full of oil. So that got replaced after I rebuilt the motor with a high flow version.

If I ever upgrade the thing further it will be to a new set of heads. I've done just about everything else to it. I'm really hopeful the gear swap will alleviate my problem. The truck is perfectly fine other then getting up 26 with the boat in tow.

Finally had the boat out and made a run up 26 with the new rear end. 5.13 gears and the 14 bolt with 35" tires work fricken great for towing!! I was doing 60mph in "D" and my speed was still increasing going up 26. It was floored but still a huge improvement.

This is a HUGE improvement over before were I could not stay in "D" and had to drop down to 2nd in order to make it up 26. Now as long as this rear end stays together and doesn't grenade like the 10 bolt did I will be extremely happy and wont want to run my blazer over a cliff anymore. :D

So are you still running stock 15" rims? Did they bolt onto that thing without drilling?
Yes everything bolted up perfectly. and I have 15" rims but they aren't stock. No drilling required but I did buy new lug nuts from les schwab.

This is a great post about the rear end. What about the front axle? If you're going to wheel, dont the front and real gears have to match? I've been considering the 14bsf swap for the rear, but there is little mention of the front axle.
