I may be ordering a Detroit for my 14bff this weekend. I did a google search for price comparisons.. I wanted to buy one at the lowest price possible. I came up with this:
http://www.ringpinion.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProdID=610

It isn't the same one that Colby installed in his 14b.... I pm'ed him about it and he sent me a link to the Detroit that he has:
http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=700+400949+4294908171+115+4294901304

Well, is there only one version or two? I can't really see the difference except the locker (is it a spool?) in the first link has the engage/disengage feature... and is the locker in the second link a full time locker?

I want the one for the money and durability. So which one should I buy?

Thanks, brothers.

EDIT: if it mattered any, my 14bff came out of a 83 2wd pickup.

They have the same part number, so they're the same unit. Different pictures, the first has a more detailed description, but they're both the same thing.

The one in the summit picture is the model for a 14bff. The pic in the first thread is probably just wrong. They have been running $400-460 in any place I have found.

The only differnce you would see is if there was an earlier model and a new one. The new models, like this, are supposed to engage a little smoother. Mine kicks a little, but its older.

There is only on app for this, it is an insert model, not a carrier. Ratchets, not spooled.

Personally, wouldn't use anything else

I thought there was only one detroit, why there are 2 different pics is beyond me... maybe the one in the first link has the gear support??
Maybe it makes it more sturdier? Ahh, I'm still confused.......:o

The first one is just using a picture of *any* detroit, not specifically a detroit for a 14bolt.

I repeat.. they're listing the same part number, so it's the same unit.

Detroit 225S10

Don't worry about the pic, it is deceiving. They don't make a detroit that replaces the carrier for the 10.5 as far as I have ever seen. Mine looks like the summit pic. Pull the carrier out, lose some stoc parts, and drop the detroit into the inside of the carrie and install the retaining pins.

pic of detroit for 14ff left of the carrier....

So Colby was right, there is only one detroit for the 14b... the pics sure made me skeptical though and I did not catch the matching part numbers in the 2 pics. Thanks for catching that and clearing it up. I'll be ordering from Summit since Colby did find a cheaper one than Randy's R&P.

Thanks a bunch guys!
