All these replies helped me think about it from a lot of different angles. I'm going with direction of-- most maintenance free--for a cruiser/daily driver build.
I'm now removing the 305 and getting a rebuilt 1987 350. These were the year they updated the blocks i believe. Will get aluminium valve covers, rid of all the smog stuff, new cast iron exhaust manifold (not headers).
