Which is a superrior transfer case in your opinions

I dont like the weight of the 203 and I just want a single case. My application is not for rock crawling. I have never rock crawled before and I dont see myself doing so in the future and if I were to then it wouldnt be all the time. I mainly go to the dunes and race. I do catch air at times and I am weary of doubling my 203 do to weight issues. Don't like the idea of having all that weight just basicly hanging out there so to speak. I dont feel that a doubler is right for my application.

That's completely understandable. I wasn't sure of the conditions you used your truck in. I just happened to be replying at the same time as you... imagine my embarassment. :doah: :haha:

Nah no need to be. I do appreciate the input. If I were into rock crawling your ideas would be spot on. Thanks for the time and input.

I should have figured out the terrain you wheeled in by your username... I'd go with an atlas if you're trying to save weight. For sand I wouldn't use more than a 3:1 t-case though.

Yeah I was thinking that the 3.1 would be a pretty good ratio to have because of the instant high RPM generated in sand and mud. Plus I run 16.50 15 paddles.

I don't do a lot of rock-crawling either, the terrain around here is mostly dirt, mud and roots. I have competed in a few sand hill climbs in Monson, MA and I loved having 2:1 low range on my t-case. My 205 has been very good to me, as a matter of fact it's probably the only part of my rig I haven't broken. I'd like a doubler someday, mostly because my front driveshaft is too short. I have plent of gearing with 5:13's in the axles and the 6.55:1 first of my 465 but the option of 4:1 would be nice in some situations. I am running 44x18.5 TSL's, a mild 350 and I have I always have plenty of wheel speed on demand whenever I want it with the gearing in my axles. I hardly ever use the 6.55 gear in my transmission unless I'm crawling, or I need to get out of my rig to tie my shoes. ;)

I like all three cases mentioned. The atlas is too much $ in opinion. I would rather go with a STaK. I don't know all the weights off-hand. But the atlas 2spd weighs 110 lbs. and I have heard that the np205 and STaK are almost the same weight.

If you want over 4.0:1 or more gearing right now, go with the stak or atlas.

In your situation, I would go with a 205 with whatever outputs you want and twinstick it if you want. Try it out, run it for awhile. If you feel you need more gearing, then convert the 205 with a LOMAX kit.

What think I'm doing is: stock 205 with 1410 outputs and twinsticks. Then later on LOMAX kit. If I want anymore gearing after that I will add a Klune-v or NWF blackbox.

**EDIT: I just found on stak's website that the stak 3spd. weighs 153 lbs. (2spd will be less obviously) and a np205 weighs 138 lbs.

Wow this site rocks!!! The $25 bucks is well worth all the advice I have received just on this single question lol. I thank you all for responding!!! Pretty much covered all the options.

Haha Glad we could help. But I think we did cover everything. Cept I didn't hear anyone mention the atlas 4 speed.

You got these choice's as I see it

203/LOMAX 205
NWF blackbox/205
NWF blackbox/LOMAX 205
Klune V 2.7/205
Klune V 2.7/LOMAX 205
Klune V 4.0/205
Klune V 4.0/LOMAX 205
Np205
203/205 Doubler
LoMax 205
Stak Monster Box 2 Speed
Stak Monster Box 3 Speed
Stack Monster Box "B" 2 Speed
Stack Monster Box "B" 3 Speed
Atlas 2.0:1
Atlas 3.0:1
Atlas 3.8:1
Atlas 4.3:1
Atlas 5.0:1
Atlas 6.0:1
Atlas 4 Speed (2.0:1, 2.72:1, & 5.44:1) or (2.72:1, 3.8:1, & 10.34:1)

He might not need new shafts since he originally had a 203. A used 205 case is probably $500 and the doubler kit is about $1,000 depending on what company he chooses. For a $1,500 investment a double transfer case setup is a stout, reliable setup with multiple gearing options.

yea what he said

you forgot

203/LOMAX 205
NWF blackbox/205
NWF blackbox/LOMAX 205
Klune V 2.7/205
Klune V 2.7/LOMAX 205
Klune V 4.0/205
Klune V 4.0/LOMAX 205

And then you can put a np203 infront of any of the Atlas t-case's so that's 8 more choices :haha:

or you could break the bank and get a Lovell :eek1:

It doesn't sound like the $$$ is an issue for this fella....so I wouldn't use that as your argument.

Also, he's already mentioned that he has no interest is running double-boxes (of any ilk) so that list of options gets a lot smaller.

FWIW, I bought an Atlas 4.....certainly not the cheapest solution, but it has LOTS of gearing options, it's compact in size and probably weighs less than a conventional Doubler that's based on iron-cased 203/205s. The concern about driveline lengths and angularity also drove me to a single-case solution vs. Doubler type options.
