Right now you maybe have tens or hundreds of stress risers. If you blast with a sharp edged grit you'll have hundred thousands to millions of stress risers. I know of a BBC that was kilt b/c someone thot it would be a good idea to clean the valve springs with glass beads. It ate many valves after the springs broke.
