Who has a Duramax pickup?

[ QUOTE ]
Hmm, So I'll be the black sheep in this thread.

If I were shopping for an '04 diesel tow rig, It would be the Dodge with the "redesigned" Cummins 600. I can't remember where I saw this, but it was a picture of the connecting rods of the big three diesels. Power Stroke, Duramax and Cummins. The Cummins rod was massive compared to the others. That said, I have driven both the Duramax and Powerstroke trucks. My bud just got a new to him PSD F-350 Ext. cab dually. Chiped, straight pipes and all. That thing is sooooo impressive to ride in and tow with. A good friend of my gramps has the '03 Duramax 3500, chipped with all goodies, and its pretty damn impressive as well. The Cummins is the same for the most part, but after seeing the picture of the connecting rods, I'm convinced. I know Lance over at PBB just got twin turbo's for is Cummins, he's expecting something like 800lb-ft of torque and 500hp... /forums/images/graemlins/bow.gif

they are all about the same cubes if i recall correctly... maybe i dont, anywho, thats why the rods would have to be larger. larger piston.

anyway, i drove an 04 dodge cummins 2wd cc short box the other day. had a 6 smeep. that will be my next truck. an 05 dodge 2wd cc 6 speed cummins long bed dually.
drool.
i want. thing has a LOT of get up. smoked a mustang on the freeway. spedo was broken, yeah, brand new rig, what gives...
but it was nice ride and i think in personal opinion, stronger than the Dmax or Pstroke.
dodge has fixed a few problems in the pas t couple years. now they just need an auto tranny worth a crap. but im buying a stick, so all is good.

As I've said before, trans is the least of your worries on the 6BT. Standard SAE bell housing means any medium duty 2x00 series allison will bolt right in. 6 speed OD and much stronger than the 1000 in the GM HDs. Also, they are available self contained with no ECM tie in like the GM has. This works fine by itself for 2WD, or married to a 241 with the GM adapter (smae tail on 1000 and 2x00 cases) or, my favorite, a divorced 205... In fact, that would be a sweet combo for the rig you have now Grant. 6BT and an Allison 2x00. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

I had been looking at a Dodge and a Chevy, '03 model year, for a diesel tow rig and daily driver. I test drove the dmax and really liked it, i hadn't owned anything but GM trucks. The new Chevies are way fugly to me and I wanted a 6-speed. Try finding one of those behind a dmax. That and the fact that there was a $10k premium for the ugly automatic chevy compared to the proven, SFA, 6-speed Cummins. I bought the mopar and I love it more every day.

People rip on dodges because of their body or interior or whatever. The only real gripe is the smaller rear seat. Most crewcabs never need to seat 4 people for any measurable about of time so the length and weight are useless to most people. I've never had complaints from people riding in the rear seat of my dodge.

Both of the IFS chevies I've owned had problems with door locks, radio, and the !$%#ing frontend alignment. Went out of alignment at 1500 miles on the dually.

I guess my point is to not give into this BS about the "Dodge Wrapper" around the CTD. It's simply not true anymore.

p.s. tow rig pic :P

just watch the balljoints on that front straight axle, been hearing about them going through them pretty good.

Not to bash your truck or anything but why is everyone caught up on the whole SFA thing? It's a damn tow rig! You don't need a SFA. After spending the day getting tossed around on the trail, I'd like to have the nice smooth ride of IFS.

Who wheels a brand new truck anyway?

eh, newer sfa rigs ride nicer than our older ones for sure. My dad's F250 rides pretty nicely. It feels like a truck, takes bumps like and truck and to me thats good. But I'm young, I still like sitting high, feeling bumps, and driving a manual. Someday I will be old like the rest of your guys /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I'd put the ride of my dodge up against the ride of a new IFS chevy any day. The fords, well they handle like an old truck to me.

I do agree on the statement about why everyone is so wrapped up on "it's a Dodge, so fit and finish sucks"...this is no longer the case.... Back in the day, probably true, But not anymore.

Yes, they could improve in some areas still, but the fit and finish is comprable to the 02' Chev. I had.
a couple differences is that the Chev had a slightly quieter interior, and the windows rolled up quicker.

I think some of the noise has to do with the dodge being a 6 shooter and has the large hole down there for the shifter??
But the dodge has so many more interior compartments, that the chev did not have...and yes, I really put those compartments to work. And the rear folding flat floor is genious.

Anyhow, as far as the ride is, they are both smooth. I actually like how the dodge absorbs the washboards roads better than the chev...it's a firmer feeling, the chev kinda bounced around a bit...maybe bad shocks??

But I do get some vibrations going 80+ in the dodge, where I did not get any vibes in the chev going 95mph.
I hear this has something to do with the stiffer frame, but who knows.

ps, sorry for contributing to the chev vs. dodge war...

But you really can't go wrong with the Big 3 these days.

Good point on interior storage, GM missed the boat there. When I moved things over from the Ram Quadcab, I thought I never would figure out how to fit all the stuff in the GM *crew cab*.

And when I make comments about the "Dodge wrapper", I'm primarily talking about the look that I don't care for (much like the new Chevy which I dislike even more). They also have problems with the longevity of the body, but that's hear-say. I didn't own my Ram long enough to judge. It held up well for the 60k or so I put on it...

I guess I'll pipe up here. I have a '01 2500 HD GMC with the 6.0l gas motor. Granted it has 6" lift and 35" tires it tows OK however I drove a new D-max last year after talking to Russ. All I can say is for DD duties and towing as your father now knows SUCKS in a gas motor truck (10-12MPG) get the D-max. As far as the tank capacity I fill up every week and a half or so.
I like to D-max because it it powerful, quiet, smooth and in the HDs the Allison is awesome. The Dodge I can't see driving everyday. A co-worker has the CD Dodge and riding in it on long trips is a feat in itself let me tell ya. It tows like a MF but it so damn loud.

I would like to 24hr. test drive a D-max with a trailer 1500mi. or so /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Keep in mind displacement PER CYLINDER:

Cummins: .98L/cylinder
Old PowerJoke: .9125L/cylinder
DMax: .825L/cylinder

No it was a 2003 old body style. I will when I sell mine drive that the ford and the GM again just to firm up my decision.
Is the '04 that much quieter?

AFAIK, they've all gone to pilot injection and common rail systems (combined with better computer control) which is the main thing that quieted the DMax down. It was the first of the current crop of "quiet" diesels.

RE: those rods......... Umm....... you are compairing a 6cyl to an 8 cyl. Kind of like apples to oranges. Even in gas engines 6cyl rods are bigger.

BTW the New Dodges are very quiet. They raised the compression ratio to quiet it down.

They are a ton quieter, you're correct, but not because of the compression ratio. It's because of the new injection system.

Andy

I don't personally care about it being quiet. So I have to shut it off in a drive thru, oh well, have to do that with my gassers as well /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
