looking for an engine master.
my co-worker just unloaded 2 sbc 350 on me
for 400 bucks.
the first he says is a new build an his son drifted his camaro into a pole so the camaro went to the scrap an the engine in my garage.
He says all it needs is a carb, he is keeping keeping efi.
the other spun a few cam lifters and recommended a complete go through

I've tried using Google foo, intra web heck even MySpace an the info is all over the place.
I'll put some pictures up to better help I'd.

I want to use this engine to teach my son how to take em down and put them back together.

any an all help would be appreciated
based on what I can tell
vortec heads
reverse style water pump
one piece Rear main seal
the mini starter
plus all the extras are a bonus.

Hopefully we can build build engine an stick it in his k20 this summer or build it for a bother project

It has the late 90's serpentine system on it, better choice if you go AC pump.

Thanks for the response
Now to see what we end up with
hoping the bottom end is good, as well as the top end. then "should be" a re seal and store for later
his plan is to either build it for a future project or stick it in his k20
he is already looking at cam swaps or just do a complete top end kit.
we will tear into it this weekend and hopefully all is good.
I will make sure plenty of pics are taken

Ok turned the motor over an its a 2 bolt main
no big deal was hoping for a 4 bolt.
now my dilemma my sons engine is making a clicking sound coming from the flex plate, torque converter area.
I'm thinking cracked plex plate since it shifts an drives good.
the motor turned out to be an L31 motor
summit brand vortec intake.
I plan on swapping motors out.
the l31 has the serpentine system already in place
alternator, ps pump an water pump (reverse flow) has the ac delete.
can I converter the water pump to forward turning style. I understand I have to plug the port at the intake
or will I run into cooling issues. Or am I over thinking it

You can convert but you need to use the original v belt equipment. I do believe after market and possibly a short run of oem serpentine standard rotation belt system

Wes it is a roller motor
peaking into the distributor hole
I can clearly see the retainers for the lifters as well as the spider (retainers).
I dont have the an issue running the serpentine system it has, but if i ould I would like to retain all the ac features.

Martin its not that I did not want to keep reverse rotation pump, at first I wanted to keep my original v belt set up to keep the AC
now I'm just going to have to get a new condenser for the serp set up.
Never having own a vortec motor and my knowledge of them was slim, but the more I learn on line and here, I decided to keep it and run it.
That still gives me the original motor to get work that way my son and I can re build that one.

So clean it up
reseal (oil pan, valve covers, timing chain)
stick it in an fire it up.
Since I don't know what cam it has (hoping for an RV style cam) will any fuel pump push rod wrk? Or since it's a roller cam does it require something different.
I'm thinking of getting a carter elec fuel pump
for the edelbrock

good think my sons truck started making a clicking sound when idling, confirmed cracked flex plate. I'm planning of replacing the whole thing.
Or is there something I'm missing.
I will be keeping the serpentine set up, figure out the wiring for the alternator (98 chevy truck)
an get the AC compressor later down the road.
I will also be doing an electronic fan conversion as well.
Windstorm or something else?
Once again thanks for all the advice

Don't know if you have a fuel pump lobe on that cam. I think you will need and electric fuel pump.

Wes
the slot for the fuel pump rod is there, as well as I can see the cam, but not knowing if the lobe is there is a different story. Heck I don't even know how to tell if there is a lobe or not, just shy of removing the cam.
So I will play it safe an run an electric fuel pump

You could put a fuel pump rod in the hole, turn crank by hand and fell if the rod moves up and down. iirc it 7/16th's to 1/2" total travel.
