who is an engine master

Just dawned on me
I dont think I have a roller cam, timing cover off
I see no cam button?
also the use of non roller rockers?
even the the heads have the saw tooth pattern for vortec heads, and it being a 2 bolt main
the numbers decode for a vortec motor

block # 10243880...350...95-00...2 or 4...Vortec truck, Gen.I crate motors and "ZZ4", roller cam, one piece rear seal

12558062...98......350..........L31 Vortec, truck, 64cc chambers, 1.94/1.5, 170cc intake port
unless I'm missing something

Does it has three raised bosses in the center of the lifter valley. They may or may not be tapped, if so it is a roller block. May or may not have the cam retained bolts tapped.

frankin5 it has the the spider gear installed that holds the cam retainers

Those are stock, self centering rockers. You need self-centering rockers for those heads. The spring appear after market

These are the numbers I pulled of the heads
12558062

an a pic of the timing chain
with no slack at all

Nice double roller chain. Motor looks very clean. Make me think was recently gone through

Wes
The engine came from a coworker
it was on his nephews camaro
Less than 3k miles on it, he paid a shop to install an engine in it an has no knowledge of what it is or had, of course no paper wrk was given him or so he says, just a bill
He drifted it into a ligh pole, insurance company totaled the car. The only thing he was able to to get out was the engine/trans combo. An the efi kit. Before it went to the scrap yard.
He told me all it needed was a carb to get it going.
I asked about the motor to show my son how to tear em down and rebuild it.
I was not expecting a motor with few miles on it.
I've never owned a vortec motor, so all this is new territory to me.
After taking off the oil pan ttocheck for 2 or 4 bolt. We discovered how clean it was, heck the valve covers were just as clean.
the expansion plugs behind the block are still brass an nkt covered in gunk.
Good thing his flexplate just cracked. Instead of doing a flexplate swap. We are doing a motor swap

here is where it all started

From GM, the ZZ4 will have a fuel pump cam on the lobe, and is roller cam

The original intake to that engine is one of the best intakes made for a street SBC, and includes both bolt patterns for the carburetor

looks like a standard GM head, I didn’t see the center bolt, or did I miss that? Definitely roller cam

awesome thanks for the info
hopefully its a good motor for a 17 year old that enjoys driving a 3/4 long bed
trans is a th400 with 4.10 gears

Looking back at your pictures, I see the center bolt for the valve cover on the iron heads. My guess is that’s a L31. Definitely an upgrade from a stock carbureted or TBI engine. @sweetk30 has a fairly new installed one in a plow truck

awesome
the engine numbers decode as a 96 an up vortec motor or zz4 4.
now to get it all ready to stick in his truck
he currently has a quadrajet on his stock motor
I have a spare eddy 1406 to go with it
or stick the quadrajet or something else

Zz4 would be aluminum head, also has more lift

I will also vote Qjet

My brand new L31 engine is going strong in my k30 .

Might do a set of roller tip rockers i have from a never run project .

Otherwise its better than the 170 - 190 hp of our trucks era of hp .

So the Qjet is staying
the block has a summit aluminum intake
I'll see if I need an adapter plate for the Q jet.
The plan is to swap motors on the weekend of the 13th of March. For now we will get everything ready an cleaned in preparation for the swap
(911 operators don't always get weekends off)

Thanks everyone for the help.
sweet 30 just skimed through your plow build page. You swapped your BB for the L31 or something else
