Who is towing how much with what gas motors?

I tow with a 32 foot class a motorhome powered by a Ford 460. Dry weight is 14,400 and GCWR is 25,000. I have towed a 4500 pound jeep on a 2200 pound trailer with it. Best gas mileage was 6mpg and worst was 3mpg in a windy storm. I loose anywhere from 10 to 20 mph going up hills depending on the grade. It has a Dana 80 rear with 5.13 gears in it.

3mpg? So you sat idling at a rest stop for 45 minutes, drove a few miles, then calculated fuel economy? Seems awful low...even for an underpowered/overtaxed Ford 460.

I have a 2002 1500hd w/ 6.0 I put a volant cool air intake , superchips programer and dual exhaust on it I think from the factory they are a little restricted in their breathing. The most I ever towed with it was a 86 4x4 burban on my uncles trailer he said it weighs about 2200lbs not quite sure what the burban weighs but with the programger set for the towing mode I ran 75 on the highway with no problems the hd has a trans temp gauge and it never came close of getting hot and the engine satyed cool I did put in some of that water wetter in the coolant not to sure if it helped or nor but I ran with the a/c on most of the time from here to Tampa Florida about 1300 mile no problems I think its the best truck I ever owned

I guess I'm the only one that tows with a 4.8L. Its an 06' crew cab 4X4 and I'm not saying perfect, but if does the job the two or three weekends
a month that I pull my 1 ton blazer. A couple of air bags in the rear for the squat factor and it's good to go. And the 20-22 mpg when I'm not pulling is great too!!!! Jus thought I would give props to the little motors that could.

I tow with a GMC 2500 4x4 6.0L and 4.10 gears. I have pulled close 10,000 lbs with it over rolling hills for about 150 miles 10 mpg and held 65mph on all but the steepest hills. I think the heaviest load I have had on it was a pair of one ton pickup's, trail rigs, on a 36' gooseneck. Still had the power to pull but the springs were asking for help at that point.

Driving my blazer, stock k5 with a tbi350 700r4 33" at's and 3.42 pulled a 2000# dump trailer with 6500# of gravel. Total weight, k5+trailer+gravel=14800#:D

Do the tube chassis and build light, Yank that 500 and do a warm up on it. Swap in some injection and the automatic of your choice. Find an old body Chevy and dump it in there. Best of both worlds!
