Whatever happened to the truck? I remember his dad wanting to “finish” but I’ve never seen it in any event pics, etc.
John, I’ll have to dig. But there was help to get it done https://ck5.com/forums/threads/jason-paynes-rig-is-the-feature-vehicle-in-petersons.249709/
They brought the truck to Blazer Bash in 2010 so it was finished enough to run. This was the urn they used to carry his ashes.
His dad and friends finished his truck and used it for a while. I used to keep up with Jason’s mom and dad but through the years we’ve lost contact. I still keep up with several of the California crew but again not like we used too. Jason was a cool guy that had some really great ideas that were just barely coming to fruition when he passed. Lots of great memories in Moab with him and because of him.
He was a great person, incredible mind, but he burned the candle on both ends, finished too quick. He was doing so much, he rarely got enough sleep. When I broke down a couple of hours away from him, he jumped in his truck with @Esteban86K5 and dragged me to Esteban's house and helped trying to fix it and eventually when we couldn't get it running Esteban towed me home. When I first met him, he was 16 at Frank Raines park with a crew cab on 38" tires, and through the years he built the gem we see in a unique way. Last time I saw him at bb06.
All this talk about him is fitting. His birthday is one week from today. He was wise beyond his years for sure. his truck now resides in his parents side yard in California. With the down turn in the economy a few years back and people going in different direction because of this thing called life, the truck doesn’t get the love it needs. I stay in contact with his brother Ken and every once in a while chat with his parents. There has been talk about giving his truck some love and back on the trail. But it’s all been two for now. It’s 3 hours away so makes for a logistical nightmare to working on it. Eventually his brother will inherit it and then I am sure he will get it running again. Thanks for the love you guys all show Jason. Evan after all this time I still get choked up about it all. My kids and I visited his plaque three weeks ago at Buck Island. Was an emotional time for sure.
Howdy All! Burt4x4 here back from the spiderweb of life that got me all tangled up and put my rig in storage fer 10yrs+... I was one of the lucky ones that got to know him and he was my friend. Along with the NorCalBigDawgs Crew! I have his home made 14FF disk brake plates on my rear-end. Heck I bought the axles from Esteban86K5 ^^^ that guy! :-) Definitely a talented fabricator and all around cool dude! Burt
I remember that! Was that you that bolted a chair to the front of your rig, like a safari hunter hahaha? <<Someone did! Damn that was a long time ago!!
Holy cow!!! Steve!!! How the heck are you?So good to see you coming out of the shadows!! Headed to Moab in just 7 days. Excited!! Drop everything and come with. LOL!
Was this in 2006? I was there but didn't get on the trails I had my blazer chalet. I did meet up at night and chatted all night.
My pics: the last pic was 2006 NCBD BF for sure. I think the first 2 might be from another trip, 2007 maybe.
