Why are SM465 K5's SOO RARE??!!!

Re: Why are SM465 K5\'s SOO RARE??!!!

Odd, dodge 1 ton with the cummins diesel is only available with the HD 5spd manual tranny according to their site. For high power vehicles and towing a manual tranny can't be beat. It's all I run in our work trucks.

There are lots of 1st gen Blazers with manual trans. In fact, I think '69 was the first year you could get a 4WD with an automatic.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, there WERE a lot of 1st gens with 4spd's. Mine had one. When I was looking for one, I found it hard to find one that still had a manual, because most had been converted to autos.

I beg to differ on that. The Allison 5 speed auto in my 2001 truck is equal or superior to any manual ever installed in a light truck.

I find that almost humorous considering there was a recall in 2001 for the, "Allison" and they were failing under WARRANTY!

Diesel + Auto = prone to failure. Just not well suited to each other at all.

THe main reason I see why the manual blazers are rare is because the 465 was an HD tranny and just wasn't necessary for a LD 1/2 ton blazer.

[/ QUOTE ]

That is complete nonsense. The 465 was offered standard in everything from 1/2 tons all the way to 1 tons and bigger.

[/ QUOTE ]
You should not be so quick to make stupid remarks and think things out a little more. Almost every vehicle out there comes standard with a manual or at least has an option for one but the majority buyers choose autos and only a select few choose manuals and with trucks it's usually because someone plans on doing heavy towing so that would rule a LD 1/2 ton blazer out of the question for that said person regardless of what tranny is avalable. Anyone that knows anything about towing knows a blazer chassis is not one suited for any kind of heavy towing that would surpass what the Th700 could handle, for the most part. I think most would agree that the manual was and is considered more of a "heavy towing" option not considering the small percentage that just plain prefer a manual over an auto which would explain why a tansmission mainly used for towing in a chassis that isn't would make them very rare in the later models. As everyone knows there were problems with the early th700R4's but not enough to convince many to go with the manual...obviously or this thread wouldn't be an issue.

Re: Why are SM465 K5\'s SOO RARE??!!!

Actually, I don't really think the heavy towing is what draws most people to manual transmissions.

I personally think that it's the saving of a $1000 option, or the personal preference that does it. Seeing as how a K5 or Suburban is already quite a bit more expensive than a pickup to begin with, the extra $800-1000 was probably a non-issue so most went for the convenience of the auto.

BTW I remembered how to remove the SM465 shifter. You need to push down on the cap at the base of the shifter and turn it counter clockwise. The cap will pop out and release the shifter for you, installation is opposite of removal. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Why are SM465 K5\'s SOO RARE??!!!

You can dump a whole gallon jug of 80/90gear oil in the shifter hole after removing it when changing the gear oil--a lot faster than using a suction gun in the hard to get at filler plug, where most of the oil spills onto your face when doing it through the filler plug hole. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Well stated in a respectfull manner. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif You bring up a good point, I didn't think of the savings with the manual.

I can tell you one thing I know for fact.

Modern diesels are capable of producing more torque at idle than any gas engine of yesteryear produced at any RPM.

Without the pump spinning at a reasonable speed, fluid flow is minimal and thus is cooling. This is my personal theory as to why Diesel + Automatic is not well suited to each other, and with all the failures, I'm not convinced otherwise.

I definitely think the possibility is there for an acceptable automatic for pickups one day, but it is not there now.

GM owns Allison. They want everyone to think that the transmission used in the pickups is something that is used elsewhere in a medium duty truck. The reality is that is simply not true. That transmission was specifically designed for that truck. In reality GM could have just called it another hydramatic and called it done, but since they own the Allison name, they slapped that name onto it to gain the respect of those who drive heavy duty trucks with automatics and give them a name with which to identify.

Heavy duty Allison transmissions do not even have park. I'd venture to say that truck is the only example of anything with an, "Allison" that has park. I could be wrong--but I have never seen, nor driven an Allison automatic in anything (including a tracked vehicle) that had a park position.

Re: Why are SM465 K5\'s SOO RARE??!!!

Hmmmm Yeah there are less of them but I'm not sure I would go so far as to say "Rare". Most of my local K5 buddies have them.
Depdog, Factory
Patrick, Factory in a 85
Chris, Factory 76
Henry, Had a 3 speed 70 but was converted to a 700R4

That more of my local buddies with manuals then not.

Re: Why are SM465 K5\'s SOO RARE??!!!

I just yanked the 465 out of a 79 K5, and took the rest of the truck to the junkyard. They dont seem to be that rare.....
