Odd, dodge 1 ton with the cummins diesel is only available with the HD 5spd manual tranny according to their site. For high power vehicles and towing a manual tranny can't be beat. It's all I run in our work trucks.

I beg to differ on that. The Allison 5 speed auto in my 2001 truck is equal or superior to any manual ever installed in a light truck.

I find that almost humorous considering there was a recall in 2001 for the, "Allison" and they were failing under WARRANTY!
Diesel + Auto = prone to failure. Just not well suited to each other at all.

That is not true. Save your comments for subjects that you know something about.

I can tell you one thing I know for fact.
Modern diesels are capable of producing more torque at idle than any gas engine of yesteryear produced at any RPM.
Without the pump spinning at a reasonable speed, fluid flow is minimal and thus is cooling. This is my personal theory as to why Diesel + Automatic is not well suited to each other, and with all the failures, I'm not convinced otherwise.
I definitely think the possibility is there for an acceptable automatic for pickups one day, but it is not there now.
GM owns Allison. They want everyone to think that the transmission used in the pickups is something that is used elsewhere in a medium duty truck. The reality is that is simply not true. That transmission was specifically designed for that truck. In reality GM could have just called it another hydramatic and called it done, but since they own the Allison name, they slapped that name onto it to gain the respect of those who drive heavy duty trucks with automatics and give them a name with which to identify.
Heavy duty Allison transmissions do not even have park. I'd venture to say that truck is the only example of anything with an, "Allison" that has park. I could be wrong--but I have never seen, nor driven an Allison automatic in anything (including a tracked vehicle) that had a park position.
