is there something wrong with them that sort of makes them undesireable to the non wheelin or 73-87 world.

i have an opportunity to straight up trade for one and it would financially be a good investment but how could i realistically use this truck? i dont really need this truck because my blazer runs and drives just fine, but it would be nice to have a spare vehicle.

i have a set of 3.73 tons that can go under it for driveability sake.

6.2 good for towing? fuel mileage OK? good for a DD? i never see them on the roads, just in people signatures. oh and the paint looks pretty bad, would want the green carc paint, but beggars cant be choosers eh?

what say you cucv owners?

m1009 or m1008? The 6.2 gets good mileage and im satisfied with the low end power. I pulled a wrangler out of the mud up to the doors without flinching with my m1008. As far as wheeling, the 08s got 1 tons with 456s and a detroit, throw some muds on there and you got a kick ass truck. The blazer has 308s with 10bolts and the govbomb. The blazers got better DD ability and some people boast 20mpg, with a max speed of around 70-75. The 08s top speed is only like 50-55ish, but its one strong truck. Very loud, slow but strong. I have a civic for DD, but if i didnt work 60miles away and worked in town id gladly dd my truck. Otherwise i wouldnt look for some for DDing, at least the 08. Very good cheap wheeling/toy trucks. Love the 24 volt starting system too

its the k30 truck, whats so good about the 24v starter? can you like put a radio cd player in there, its a lonely 10 minutes to work lol.

The starter and alternator are the only things 24Volt and they are better more volts = better starting

CUCV's are good trucks but they dont have much in the way of creature comforts heater is all they have lol which in mu opinion is what you want in a wheeler why beat the snot out of a nice well equipped truck when you can buy those so cheap

I'm thinkin about buyin one for the 6.2. I hear if done just right 20mpgs is no problem and you can make your own fuel!!

I get an honest 18mpg with my 1028 but 65 is about as fast as I'd be taking it 55-60 seems to be the sweet spot

if you got a 10min ride to work do it. if i had the position id sell my ****box civic in a heartbeat. I love my cucv. You can put a radio in, its got all the stock spots for the speaks and such. If you want soundproof you can bedline. Very reliable drivetrain. Im eventually giving mine a new coat of paint and stripping that rust, not to mention an undercoat of oil. I like it better than my old k5, but maybe thats because diesels grown on me, i dont know. Love the camo too, people always givin you looks haha

And yeah, starter, alts and bats are 24v, more cranking power for those cold starts, everything else is 12v. As long as the 24v is intact leave it stock, it works fine. glowplugs are 12v..

they can be it just depends on your state texas has those queer inspections so its hard to say

The only real downside is the 6.2. Gutless turds. 143hp and 257 lb-ft tq is ridiculously weak. If you want it to comfortably drive faster than 60-65, put bigger tires on it.

I didn't say texas was queer but there inspection is queer

depends on the state, i know my state you need the title, some are satisfyed with the bill of sale. Know what you need and much sure you get it. If your going to buy from someone, get a title, and if you buy from the government, get an sf97 and get a title..

i daily drive my m1008, its 10 miles to work . i changed it too 4:10 gears,35 bfg mudds, jvc cd player and speakers in the stock locations, swiched the vinyl seat with a cloth one,4inch rancho(used),converted to 12v, changed some body pannels and sprayed it flat black....i get a steady 17-18 mpg. i was going to strip it and junk it, all i wanted was the rears and the tranny but i ended leavin the tranny in and putting in a d44 and putting the 60 in my shortbed...........

CUCVs are cool, but as far as having a truck that when non-truck people see it are like look at that pile I bet some redneck drives that, ya know theres the whole image thing, plus I work in Boston and its hard enough to find a parking spot let alone one big enough to fit a massive longbed in. And forget trying to parallel park.

I bought my CUCV K5 in 2000. It had about 40K miles on it. Low mileage, but you have to keep in mind these trucks aren't generally treated well during their active duty time. My truck needed the tranny rebuilt shortly after we bought it. About 1yr later we had to replace the injection pump and ultimately all the injectors needed replacing within 2yrs of purchase. The truck started running weak - and I mean weak for a 6.2L so you can imagine how bad it was - and found that it was going to need a rebuild. That's when we swapped in a gas motor.

Yes it did get great mileage, 19mpg. Problem is that they get abused while they are in the millitary. In a pinch, they often get fuels other than diesel run through them. Our diesel mechanic said the old surplus CUCV's practically keep him in business. Another problem is that they often sit for long periods before they are sold. Mine had an undiscovered nest of mice on the valley pan below the intake on the motor.

The CARC paint is a bitch to remove and really should have special measures in place due to the toxicity of the paint. If I had that to do over again, I would have left mind desert tan. Matter of fact, the truck has gone back to that color, at least half of it anyway. I think that paint would hurt the tree before any tree limbs managed to scratch any paint off.

Also make sure the truck is complete. Sometimes parts get removed for spares before the military releases them to auction.

If I had it to do over again, I still would. IMO it's just better going into the deal with your eyes wide open to the potential problems.

if i buy a CUCV i would do it to rebuild the 6.2 then swap it into my k5. maybe get the d60 out of the front while im at it lol

I think it would be fun to build a hopped up 6.2L, but it is more expensive - kinda like building Mopars. :D
