why does my 383 suck? >> now a crack??

not sure exactly, but its a big one. leaking a lot down the back side of the engine. I don't think it's the oil pressure sending unit, or the rear main but I can't see back there to be sure. I'm planning on yanking it out and taking a look.
Could be the seal around the distributor...
Or the rear seal on the intake. I've seen them just barely be hanging on and finally pop out. Both Julie's Suburban and my K2500 have leaks there. I need to get new gaskets on them but have not had the time yet.

I'd spray the biotch down before ya yank it out, that's a lotta work for a leak that could be fixed

Thats a possibility.
As far as lots of work to pull it goes, I built myself a nice shop crane, so hopefully it won't be too bad. Plus, I want to inspect my clutch and flywheel.
Got the engine pulled yesterday and started looking for the leak.

So far it looks like its seeping out of every possible spot, but I'm having trouble seeing any obvious massive leaks...
I'd bet if you put on some nice mid length headers and a dual exhaust you'd be happier with your engine...those center dump manifolds are pretty restrictive...

Of course I just found a guy local that is willing to set me up with a 6.0 for $2500 including all accessories, modified wiring harness and programing. He even offered to come help me troubleshoot if I ran into any issues.
So I might go that route, but I want to get this engine into good working condition first either way so that I can sell it for a decent price.
took the engine apart and got a look at the top of the pistons. Looks like I have these:

with my 76cc heads that means a compression ratio of 9.10. That isn't high enough to need higher octane gas, is it?

nada.....
hmmm, guess I still have timing issues then. I went to mid-grade gas (I've been using 91) and the pinging was back, although not as bad.
A bit worried I have bigger issues.
looks like I was leaking coolant under the intake manifold. Also found a crack. Right behind the left-most push rod.

It looks like the leak that is coming from the top was coming from an intake bolt, presumably not tightened enough.

after thorough cleaning, it is definitely a crack. 
I was able to see inside the water jacket to the other side of the crack and it is certainly there. The question is, what to do about it. It's so small that at most angles it looks like it isn't there but I would like to do something to ensure that water isn't seaming through.
Think I could do something simple like JB weld or something?

I certainly would not want JB Weld breaking loose inside my motor. There is also a good chance the crack will run (think windshield cracks). May be time for a new block.
