On my 91 I keep going back and forth on what gauges to use. I can only think of a few reasons to keep it electronic but I dont know the whole scope of the system.

1 its quiet and accurate.
2 I already have it
3 I dont have to repin the connector

Now my non coherent thoughts on cons:

My plan for the truck is to have the most reliable and common parts so I can eventually be on a road trip and walk in to a parts store and be on the road again. Speedometer failure is unlikely and not critical but why not consider it.
Drivetrain is p pump 12 valve cummins which is all mechanically controlled. Hydro clutch nv4500 with a gm 205. Pretty rock solid idea there.

I currently have several tach clusters and my stock non tach 91 still in it.

I'd like to use these two gauges. They are new gm mechanical 5 digit speedometer and the 4k diesel tach.
5 digit kinda sucks. On the lookout for a new 6 digit. I dont think mechanical 6 digit with trip exists.

Problems here is I dont know how to put that tach in my current cluster.
What do I do with the left corner battery light? I want to have a boost gauge there. I know I'll never have 150 psi boost but it's a cool factory gauge.
It has two needles independent of each other.

I will be losing the tbi and the 4l80 so what does that leave for electrical components? Will the speedometer function after that?

Knowing much more than I, how would some of yall go about building a cluster for a truck like this?
There are many more questions I haven't even got to yet.
Thanks for getting to the end of the rambling.

Your 91 cluster has the extra wall in the lower right hand hole that would be problematic to install any gauge. You could dremel it out. But I'd just get an earlier cluster housing and start from there. The tach/fuel gauge could go right in and then the pressure gauge in the lower right with not much problem. What I'm not sure of is how the wiring from the printed circuit goes to the small fuel gauge. The tach itself would have it's own harness normally.

The 6 digit odometer is unique to the electric speedo (90/91). 88/89 had 5 digit odometers with trip, but they were mechanical. You could use a mechanical speedo with the change being made to your 205 for a cable driven speedo.

I wouldn't tear up the 91 cluster for the fact that it's worth more complete to somebody doing an LS swap that wants the electric speedo.

Another reason to not use my OEM cluster. The tiny fuel gauge works just the same as the stock large fuel gauge and plugs in just the same. Imagine it just super tiny.
