Why NOT to buy 16.5" rims (pics inside)

Re: Why NOT to buy 16.5\" rims (pics inside)

Well, there are two schools of thought on where exactly the rod should go. Some I've seen it is simply added to the edge of the rim just to the inside and others put it inside the bead seating area. Inside the bead seating area would make it much more difficult to get tires on and off but just inside the lip I think wouldn't effect anything. Just give more surface for the bead to hook up to.

Long...
I know some of the old school drag racers used to drill holes in the bead of the rim and run screws into the tire to keep it from spinning on the rim. I thought about doing that to mine but then I thought it would probably just rip the bead and destroy the tire when it came off. I like the 1/4" rod inside the wheel acting as a safety bead. I think you could also use it on the outside of the rim to keep the lip of the wheel from crushing when it gets bashed against rocks/stumps etc. I know my leaks were always caused by a bent rim /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
And for those of you who mentioned you have aired down your tires with no problems, did you notice my tires were at 25psi when my tire popped right off the wheel completely? I just thought I'd remind you. All it takes is a good blow to the sidewall and off she comes! Mine was caused by a rut I was in that happened to turn to the left while my foot was on the gas. oops.

The 70s G30 vans used 16,5" rims WITH the safety bead. Only problem is they are not wide enough, but I used two rims to make one rim and they work great.

I didn't know that. Thanks

Was this done with slicks/tubes? For some reason I'm thinking they did this with tubes to keep the wheel from spinning in the slick, not keep the tire on the bead.

I don't know exactly. An old friend of mine used them on his fiberglass bodied, big blocked camaro because the tires spun on the rim when he would launch. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

cybrfire is burning me a custom set for my wagon.. only way to run 16.5s ...Locked!

I can't justify the price of bead locks when a 15x10 wagon wheel only costs about $40. A little time (few hours) with the angle grinder, a few discs and I MIGHT have $200 invested in all 4 of my wheels. Putting bead locks on means $200 per corner /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif Bead locks are sweet though and I'd have a set if price wasn't a concern.

$200 a corner? you need to PM cybrfire and see what you'r missing...

also it isn't just 2 calipers.. I have 4 wheel disc and 3 other rigs that can all run the same rims.. too much time with a shield and grinder...(16 calipers /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif)
plus i got a smokin' deal on some sx's so I'm good to go for what I need and want..
