Why NOT to buy 16.5\" rims (pics inside)

This was at 25psi. at midnight in a mud pit. I had to drive on the rim for a couple hundred feet before I found hard enough soil to mount up my spare... I'm glad I bought the BIG hi lift jack /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I got all 5 tires for $150 so couldn't pass... I sold them and got what I paid back shortly after these pics were taken.

Agreed, if you don't have 'locks, I wouldnt touch a 16.5 with a big stick.

Re: Why NOT to buy 16.5\" rims (pics inside)

if you can find some aluminum whls the tire will stick better to the aluminum than the steel whl,
i used to run 10 pounds on a 16.5 whl ,40'' bogger,
only had problems when i went down to 8 pounds.
15 '' beadlocks now though,

Re: Why NOT to buy 16.5\" rims (pics inside)

oh ha ha. If I had those rims I'd run 16.5's too /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

At 5 psi I had 2 tires pop off the rim without moving the truck at all. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I had a slow leak and forgot to air them up before work one day... came home and had to put 2 tires back on the rim /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

16.5's are an interesting nut in the box of chocolates, pretty good tire availability, the only wheel available for some combo's, they fit over big brakes, etc, BUT you can't really air down without beadlocks. That's just the way they are.

Re: Why NOT to buy 16.5\" rims (pics inside)

heres a funny story:

back when my dad first got out 78 burb it had 32" coopers on 16.5 rims. My brother an I took it to the coast and ran the tires down to 7 PSI...yes 7 PSI on a 16.5 rim... we ran all day cutting donuts and everything with no probs...YET.

go to part the rig out 2 years later and with a tire low in the dirveway it rolls off the bead just in the driveway,LOL!!!

Re: Why NOT to buy 16.5\" rims (pics inside)

Run stock 7" wide ones. They are cheap (read used), common, and a 15" wide tire has a hard time popping off without popping right back on. There is some slight tire wear issues in the center, but hey, we all have issues /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Re: Why NOT to buy 16.5\" rims (pics inside)

nice looking beadlocks.
I have 16.5's . Lowest tire pressure I've gone to 15 psi. Whenever I do get new tires , I'm switching to 15"

I can't justify the price of bead locks when a 15x10 wagon wheel only costs about $40. A little time (few hours) with the angle grinder, a few discs and I MIGHT have $200 invested in all 4 of my wheels. Putting bead locks on means $200 per corner /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif Bead locks are sweet though and I'd have a set if price wasn't a concern.

Re: Why NOT to buy 16.5\" rims (pics inside)

ive never had problems with my 16.5s yet.had em on now for 2 years aired down to 15psi and rockcrawled no problem.i wouldnt go down any lower than 15 though just in case.the 45 degree bead just isnt good enuf to hold the tire in a high wheelspin or high torque on the tire situation aired down.why is it that the only rim that has the 45 degree bead comes standard on a lot of trucks.

Re: Why NOT to buy 16.5\" rims (pics inside)

Price was a concern for me too, but I ended up finding some 8 bolt hummer rims for $15 a piece(bought 15 of them) and I found some magnesium ruflats on this website for $22 a piece shipped. So I am into my dual beadlock 16.5 rims for $185 and that's for 5 of them. If you are patient you can find lots of 8 bolt hummer wheels for cheap, and there are runflats popping up because some people are changing to the PVC ones. Not sure why though.

Re: Why NOT to buy 16.5\" rims (pics inside)

Another thing you can do with 16.5" rims is wrap a 1/4" rod around the edge of the wheel. I've never done this myself but I hear it helps retain the tire. I guess like building up your own safety bead.

Re: Why NOT to buy 16.5\" rims (pics inside)

I never thought of doing that. It would be fairy easy since I work in a machine shop and have access to 1/4" rod and the equipment to bend and weld it. I might have to try this sometime in the winter. Thanks for the tip.

Re: Why NOT to buy 16.5\" rims (pics inside)

Would adding the 1/4" rod to the wheel affect mounting and dismounting tires?
Where would you put the 1/4" rod?
