Why won't my 4 speed go into gear?

Re: Why won\'t my 4 speed go into gear?

The rear most fork is for reverse. It honestly sounds as though one of the forks is not in it's slot properly. I would remove the cover and make sure it's lined up properly. Remember that the reverse mechanism has to be halfway between in and out to line up properly. Once the cover is off it can slide freely so it would be easy to mis-align. Once the cover is off install the shifter and make sure it is halfway into reverse before putting the cover back on.

Re: Why won\'t my 4 speed go into gear?

I knew about the halfway into reverse thing. I've been using a screwdriver through the fill hole on the left side of the tranny to hold the reverse gear while I drop the thing down.

Ok, so the rear top rail is reverse, then what's that long one for?

I'll pull the cover again when I get home and I can check it out. It's just a PITA without a bolt in tranny hump. Did you know that the motor will rock back in its mounts far enough for the transfer case to hit the ground as long as the distributor is out?

Well not quite but almost.

I'm at a friends but I'll pull the cover again when I get home.

I guess the cover wasn't on correctly. I got it on, then I stuck a screwdriver down in the shifter hole to make a square like the guys said able (the left most rail wasn't quite lined up. It's a little notchy but it goes into gear!!!

Notchy and LONG throws are normal for a 465! It won't speed-shift worth a darn! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: Why won\'t my 4 speed go into gear?

They can be speed shifted...it just takes a ton of practice /forums/images/icons/grin.gif and the wide ratio doesn't really make it worth the effort. /forums/images/icons/blush.gif

I don't care if it's notchy, it can be notchy, as long as it has four forward gears and reverse!!

Re: Why won\'t my 4 speed go into gear?

I hear ya! I could sorta speed-shift mine, but if I got too crazy with it, the shifter would jam between gears, leaving the tranny stuck in 2nd. /forums/images/icons/mad.gif That's how I learned about removing the shifter and lining up the shift blocks. /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif I used to keep the tools handy for pulling the boot, popping out the shifter and lining up the blocks. /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

I've managed to bark the tires on the 2-3 shift (L=1) but like I said it's not really worth it. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif
