why would they paint the transfer case?

I'll chime in.....

yes, as Scott mentioned, it hinders heat dissapation... but I agree with Chris, I highly doubt you'd see much of a difference, if any at operating temps.......... tons of AL marine gears come painted from the factory....

one issue that most don't know about in this case is adhesion... little history lesson here....... the REASON my often touted zinc chromate primer was originally invented was for AL... anyone ever see painted AL with paint coming off in sheets? thats why, improper coating..... if there was ever a substrate that needs/wants/requires a self-etching primer, it's AL, galvanized too...

all that being said, polish the SOB...... :wink1:

In my book EVERYTHING gets self etching primer :D

Hell I think I might use self etching primer before I paint the panels on the new truck :D

So you like to cheat.

What ever happened to "fair and square"?

We never got caught so it was not cheating...I worked as a tech inspector almost 5 years at a race track...I didn't care what people were running until they finished in the top 5...Then I nailed them...

I was just thinking if that paint chips off, it will look like hell. But if you guys think it's a reasonable thing to do, I won't bitch at him. I like to paint things pretty too, just not the aluminum stuff.

I agree, I'd rather not paint but I cannot deny either how attractive and badass it looks.

Theres a book all about cheating in racing. One of the early great's in nascar.

DId some crazy stuff....made a 7/8 scale car (why they check them with templates now), filled their cage with NOS and plumbed it into the motor, etc.

NASCAR was cool and interesting then. Booooring now.

Aluminum should NEVER be painted. Things that are made of aluminum are usually made that way for a reason (to dissapate heat). Once you paint aluminum you are pretty much sealing in the heat and the aluminum can no longer dissapate the heat as it was intended to do. There will be people here who will argue the point but I could care less as I know better than to paint aluminum items such as trans cases, and t-cases.

I agree 100%. I never paint aluminum cases.

IMO things like the 208 more to reduce weight than to dissapate heat. Of course aluminum transfers heat quicker than steel and I never paint aluminum stuff.

I really doubt that painting an NP208 is going to burn it up.

The heat transfer is much more relevant on an auto trans of course.
I think weight savings play a much larger role in why a lot of stuff is made in aluminum. I doubt heat is the main reason they chose to go with a lighter easier to work with metal.
