will a 97 K2500 4x4 truck have my d60 up front?

found one being parted out but guy doesn't wanna look and see if says d60 underneath? i thought 97's were ifs? thnx dudes
 
not to mention when did dana 60s ever come in the front of 3/4 ton trucks? 3/4 tons only got HD 44's IIRC.

a ton is 2000#'s ...ok but a "2500" isn't a 1ton truck....boy oh boy..learning all kinds of stuff lately :P
 
You are looking for a 78(?)-91 Chevy K30 or an m1008.

You should also read this link thoroughly. People have been known to swap 8 lug 10s/44s in to a one ton and sell the truck with the buyer thinking it had a 60 in it. The kingpin knuckles are the giveaway.

Tonnage is not very relevant to the payload of modern trucks, as the classes have become very conservative (probably from trying to outclass each-other's 2500 trucks). The nomenclature is more useful to describe the class of light duty truck. A new HD2500 usually has a payload of at least 2000lbs, but is still considered a "3/4 ton" truck class. The big three all generally use the same nomenclature to describe their classes, however...10/100/150/1500= 1/2 ton; 20/200/250/2500= 3/4 ton; 30/300/350/3500= 1 ton
 
2500 is just a marketing number that has no bearing on anything. Neither did 20, 25, 10, 15, 5 30, 35, 3500, etc.

Dodge 3/4 tons got D60's and some Ford F250's in the late 70's did as well.

Just to add, some of the Dodges ran external hubs (less desireable) and the Fords are all drivers-drop (although the kingpin ones are worth a lot of money, so they're worth collecting).

The Dodges also have a slightly different spring spacing and WMS. They are still a good axle swap, but it's usually easier to just find a GM 60...they are fairly plentiful, even out here on the west coast.

There are also a ton of balljoint D60s out there. You do not want to mess with those. They are not worth any money and the knuckles are difficult to do proper steering with. A lot of them also have 2 piece longshafts which are not a good setup for offroad rigs.

Ford BJ D60's aren't the worst thing in the world. Take one over a 10 bolt or D44 if I was doing a SAS on a IFS truck.

Coming up with a steering system for them on a leaf-sprung truck is complicated though. I believe I've seen someone making aftermarket knuckles with a real steering arm on them now though. I see a lot of ignorant sellers around here putting them on Craigslist for around $800. I would do a balljoint 60 for say, $400, but after the cost of doing steering on a balljoint axle, you'd be way over the price of a kingpin axle if you paid $800 for it.

Crossover/hi-steer on a kinpin axle costs probably $200-$300 on average for a good pair of steering arms that bolt in place of the kingpin caps on top of the knuckles. Since there's no room to intelligently do any type of inverted-letter steering on a leaf-sprung Chevy, you need to have a passenger-side steering arm. Balljoint 60s never came with provisions for a steering arm on top of the knuckle, so you have to get an aftermarket knuckle. I don't think they have a flat area that's machineable like the old 44s. But even that costs money.

The unit bearing axles are terrible. All those Ultra4 guys running the Spidertrax fronts are destroying unit bearings in less than a season. There's conversions, but that costs a ton of money too.
 
Very true. I wasn't thinking for this sort of truck though, a Dodge or GM axle would be far simpler just for pumpkin location.

The Dodge 60's up to 88 aren't tough to fit under a Chevy but they have external hubs which are notorious for loose bolts (and hence failures) and there are no parts you can buy to convert one to 35 spline outers. You'd have to change to internal style hubs which isn't cheap.

The 89-93 Dodge D60's had internal hubs and are very similar to a Chevy D60.

I'm pretty sure it's 90-93 for the internal hubs.
But also keep in mind that some of them can be dana 61s, it's harder to find decent gears for those.
