my 2wd 92 GMC has the hanger.... surprisingly, the mechanism works pretty flawless.. shot some lith in it and ran it up and down a couple times... BUT that rim is pretty much toast from joysey salt...
had a flat right before my surgery, the rust on the rim nut seats was so bad, i had to stop and retighten it 2 or 3 times as it worked its way thru the scaley rust...
*reminder - find a new spare rim this summer... *
The spare tire under my parent's '93 Caravan had never been used before, till one day I decided to remove it ,the rim was so rusted and flaky I figured it was useless if I ever needed it anyways..tire was still new,had all the nubbies on the tread, and that blue dye on the white wall..to my surprise it wasn't all dried out and cracked..
I hadn't used one of those factory spare "lowering devices" before--didn't read the owners manual, should have..I saw what looked like a hex nut sticking out of the center of the rim,I assumed it was what held the tire up..
I stuck my air impact on it and tried spinning it off, then realized it was just a crimped thing on the end of the wire rope, which was now a ball of fuzzy shrapnel ,sharp as razors..
I took my torch to the cable and cut it off,and the spare almost took off my arm when it crashed to the ground..

.
I took the tire and rim in my garage and put 35 lbs of air in it--it was nearly flat ,so it would not have been of much help if I had a flat--nor would I have ever got it out from under the van if a rear tire went flat..
Soon as I inflated it,I heard air hissing out all around the beads,I put soapy water on it and it blew bubbles all around the rim..
Then I flipped the rim over, and saw the back side was peeling layers off it--I whacked it gently with a ball pein hammer to knock the flakes off,and it went right thru it,and all the air blew out in like 3 seconds, plastering my eyes with rust flakes...

..good thing I never tried using that rim..

..it was paper thin in spots!..
I ended up getting another rim at the junkyard and put the spare tire on it..despite it being 15+ years old at the time,I drove on it several thousand miles with no issues, and its still on it now, full of air..yet I've had other tires look like they are 100 years old that were only 5 years old..guess they don't make rubber like they used too..
