it shouldn't, as long as the 2wd is a 99 or comparable year, (has the same internal electronics) ill look in my book and see if there is anything different between the years on the 96 and newer trannies.

there is no difference in any of the electronics from 96 and up. so, no the ecm will not know a difference.
