Wilson's 1986 k5 blazer build

I won't get to work on the blazer for a couple more weeks, but could a kill switch let the truck just turn over and not turn on? If that's not a possibility then it looks like I am adjusting the valves again

Stupid question here... But, is your coil wire connected at the switch?
Im with the 180* out distributor crowd.

Where the hell did that come from? :dunno::popcorn:

Wilson...........Bring #1 cylinder up to TDC, making sure you on on compression stroke. Check your balancer in relation to timing tab. Make sure rotor is pointing at #1 on Dizzy cap, lace wires accordingly. Provide a 12 volt source to Dizzy and fire it up.

The most sure fire way to make sure you're on #1 TDC is to remove the passenger side valve cover. Watch #6 rocker arms for rock over while your indicator on the crank points to 0.

Martin

I tried bringing it to TDC multiple times and it wouldn't fire. I even tried a couple times where the mark was opposite of the indicator on the motor because there was only one mark on the harmonic balancer. I will try taking the passenger valve cover off. And also to clear the confusion, I had to adjust the valves myself and some have suggested that the truck will not start because I adjusted the valves wrong. Should have a chance to come back to Dallas next weekend so will keep you guys updated

Well just re adjusted the valves and after I stab the dizzy here in about 5 minutes I'll know if she runs

No start. Just turned over and backfired out of the carb. Tried stabbing the distributor 2 times also

Sound like you have the distributor off form the #1 cylinder. Have you made sure that it is pointing at #1 wire on the cap. You may need to adjust the oil pump rod to get to line up correctly.

No I knew to line it up at the #1 cylinder. What I think may have happened was is that I just lined up the mark on the harmonic balancer and assumed it was in the #1 firing position and adjusted the valves that martin stated, and then rotated it 360 degrees, adjusted the rest of the valves, turned another 360 and assumed it was back at TDC...So hopefully I adjusted the valves for the #1 firing order when they should have been adjusted for the #6 firing order. I'll get back at it again thanksgiving break. Hopefully I can do it right:doah: I have the diagram of the exhaust and intake valves and have watched and read plenty of videos, so I know how to tighten them down correctly, I just need to be positive next time I am in the right firing position when I adjust them. I really am hoping this is my issue because it is time to get this thing running to fix all the bugs

If you tighten the rocker arms all down loosely, it is very obvious which ones are suppose to be adjusted.

Martin

Dumb question I know, but I did this once before, are you using the DRIVERSIDE FRONT cylinder as number 1? Only reason I ask is I have used the passengerside one before on accident.

Yes I am using the correct one...I will just have to get back at it during thanksgiving break:popcorn: Not too stressed out about it because I have another car to drive in Austin...This next time around I am going to take my time doing it right. Cant I just put a finger over the #1 cylinder spark plug whole and when it starts to blow out, I just go to the mark on the harmonic balancer and line it up. This (I would think) would have me at the number 1 firing position. Then I would adjust the half of the rockers as told. Then rotate the balancer 360 and adjust the other half. After that I would rotate the balancer another 360 to get it back at the number one firing position. After this I would put everything back together, stab the dizzy and it should fir up right? Truck is turning over fine it just wont actually start and backfires out of the carb. Any possible cause would be good info for me to know so I could check. I think this was happening to us on the last motor and it ended up being that the wires werent in the right order on the dizzy...Any info helps at this point as I do research for this next week. And possibly get some new goodies for the truck

I'm telling you, the easiest way is to watch for rock over on #6, and line up the timing mark. You do have the correct timing mark for your harmonic balancer, right?

Martin

That is another thing. The I got the motor from my brother who bought it from another guy. I have no real way of knowing for sure if the timing mark is correct

And I told my dad what to look for regarding the rock over because I was under the truck using my flexplate tool. I don't know if he knew exactly what to look for.

If you have the spark plugs out, you should be able to turn it over by hand from the front of the engine.

Martin

Spark plugs are in and I always end up bustin a few knuckles when I do it because of the socket falling off. Gunna worry about getting my christmas list for the blazer started now.

Got some 2000-2007 gmc sierra seats to put in the blazer. Will have to drill a few holes but i will take pictures when I'm done

Not yet...Someone stole my jack and flywheel turning tool and the harmonic balancer bolt is stripped so I cant adjust the valves...I believe I was adjusting them correctly but the TDC mark on the balancer was not correct. I made a piston stop tool out of a spark plug to make sure where my TDC mark should be, but then I realized someone stole my tools. Should be able to get back under the hood sometime this week
