I did a search trying to find a thread on the available winches out there and what everyone uses. What have you had luck with and what have you not had luck with? I think warn is a good brand but pricey. I have seen a harbor freight winch in action and was actually impressed and I can get a 10,000# HF winch for under $500 but I don't want to waste my money:confused:. I think I should look at buying a winch because I am getting close to being "there" with my build.

Run far, far away from any HB winch.

Find a used Warn 8274; it will be the same price, faster, stronger, and more reliable than any new cheap winch.

Old warns pop up on craigslist pretty often, I would rather have a used warn over a new hf anyday

Smittybuilt XRC10 10,000lb for $399. at 4 wheelparts. they come with a 1 yr warranty and you can but a lifetime warranty for like 30 bucks.
I bought the XRC8 8000lb and mounted it behind my front bumper.
I'll use my burb for hunting and mild 4 wheelin.

Playing devil's advocate here: Thirty bucks buys you the right to remove the winch when it breaks, take it back, have it fixed, and reinstall it.

An old Warn, rebuilt on your bench with Billavista's help, is decidedly less likely to break, and if it does fail, you can fix it trailside -- where you need it! -- and move on.

(What do I know ... I have a Ramsey, but a 20+ year old one that I've been through myself, so if it does give me grief, I know what to do about it...)

if you get a harbor freight one just be sure to buy the warrenty. a friend of mine scraps old cars and has one on his trailer. he abuses the hell out of it and probably takes it back every year cause it breaks

i hope your joking?? he's asking which one to buy.

My bad. When I read it the first time I thought the first paragraph was him selling it but it must be an add he was quoting. All is good now I'll just go the the bathroom and slap my own pee pee.:D

I have a Bulldog winch S. Watson calls it my Chink DOG but I like it. It is a 12,000lbs unit and they run about 675.00. We have bought a 9500lbs and about to get an 8000lbs. it is a Nice winch the Remote switch is a little not so great, But they make up for that in customer service.

I've been shopping for months... I'm doing a hidden one, so I'm set on a Warn XD9000 if possible, or an m8000 if I have to settle... the xd9's are kinda hard to come by used, but the m8000's come up all the time...

you can pick up an 8274 on the bay used consistently for 3, 400.... if i wasn't going hidden, thats what I'd be hunting.. bunch the last couple weeks...

this is the best winch money can buy..i got mine for 500 and it came with a mount and all

eh, not to buy new! ch*ts like $1400! :wink1::haha:

I really wanna find that xd9000.. from what I've researched and concluded, that'd pretty much be the ultimate hidden... you could make a 12,000 work, but the dimensions are tight...

been a bunch of good 8274 deals lately...:wink1:

I would like to build mine on to a hitch so I can store it in the back and then put it into a receiver in the front or the back.

I have the Xd9000i and I would have liked to gone bigger. There has been a few times when in sand and mud it wasn't quite enough for a full size, even with a snatch block. I've rescued 5 jeeps with it though... Thats always fun.

You can get the cradles pre-made, easy enough.

But the first time you try a sideways pull and all that angled force is on your receiver hitch ... you'll be popping tubes and bolts something fierce. If you're only gonna do mud pits where you're guaranteed a straight pull, maybe ... but tight trails, you'd be in trouble.

I give my weirdo hidden mount that, not only does it go from frame rail to frame rail, spreading out the force, it reinforces the frame rails as a crossmember :haha: (The big honking bumper should help too.)

OTOH, using the winch presupposes me getting my ass -- and the truck -- out on the trails, which doesn't seem to be happening. (My excuses involve a lack of money for gas, my wife not working, etc... :surepal: :haha: )
