Winch choices

Well I was wondering about that strenght issue. Where will the weak point be? I would like to build a receiver into a bumper that goes from frame rail to frame rail front and rear.

The receiver tube itself is gonna be the worst, as you have a foot or so of a level in the form of the post going into it and then the cradle... basically the distance from the fairlead to the front of the tube.

Actually -- and remember I never completed my engineering major -- you've also got some vertical forces at work there, plus twisties (torsion.)

Even if the crossmember is nice and solid, the receiver tube will need some serious gusseting, and the post on the cradle itself should be sleeved and welded good ... the premade ones are prolly only .187 wall, and that can bend with enough force applied =))

You get the idea.

Yep, like dremu said a hitch mounted winch will work fine for straight pulls but will fail relatively easily in sideways pulls.

you will hurt your approach angle with a removable mount also. i have each setup, and there is a big difference.

Don't know if these pics would help fellas but I built my own front receiver hitch and feel that it could hold up to tremendous straingt and side loading. The side plates are 3/8" and the gussets are 1/4" with trailer hitch tube for the main part. My biggest fear is actually ripping or bending the frame in. See if this helps your hitch mount needs. Also my approach angle is really not affected much at all and the only time it was affected it protected my BLING front bumper from being destroyed.

I have more pics if you need different angles.

the reciever mount doesn't make the approach angle worse, it's when you put the winch and cradle on. i just made a hidden mount for the truck in my sig.

Very nice! Can you slide a hitch into that receiver tube?

Yes, it is a true receiver type. It is just like what DIY4X sells except I had about 3 hours of cutting and grinding into a 2"x2"x10" solid bar stock to fock with. Then Kert comes out with his shortly after:doah:Slides in and out with a 3/4" grade 8 bolt holding it in place.

Alright big blzn I need more pictures now. I got a winch and I am still thinking about the receiver for front and rear.

Mike, give me a second and I will see if my laptop has the other pics or if they are in my work office PC. I'll have to post pics several times as my computers only let me do 2-3 at a time. Stand by.

Here you go Mike. Let me know if you have anyother questions. Itruely believe this is far stouter than anything you can buy off the shelf.

Thank you sir! I still haven't decided if I am going to go behind the bumper or with the hitch like you got!

I wish I could have fully concealed the hitch behind the bumper but I believe I would have had to modify the frame horns a bit and didn't want to start cutting the horns apart at this point.

Yeah I know what you mean. What I was saying is I don't know if I am going to install my winch behind the bumper or install a hitch like you have. I would like to be able to keep the winch in the bed and use it front or rear but I am still weighing the pros/cons of using the hitch set up.
