I mounted my winch just like your idea.

I had to notch the radiator core support to make it fit.

Yeah, there's not much about trucks that are cheap.
I've had good fortune selling old parts and engines to finance my project.

Oh i hear ya. Took me 10 years to finally get to the point of selling some of that stuff. But the project is moving along nicely

I got my kid one these this week. It works well and the spring clips are good and strong.

All it is, is a metal plate with flash light clamps attached. I bought clamps for $5 and used scrap metal. You could even attach directly to the license plate.

I have my winch up side down between my frame rails, plenty of people have done this.

I works fine but I haven't had to actually need it yet.

One more thing to keep in mind is how to reach the free spool lever.
