MM 12000#er on a 5700# k5. Used, abused, cheap, slow but allway's gets the job done. I pulled my buddy's 46' 2 1/2 ton 4x4 dump truck, flat tires and sticky brakes, pulled it easy.

i like how it started out would make a killer rear bumper i think
I have another piece of tube that will be made into the rear bumper. It will be straight and have the same shackle mounts/pull points.

anyone or does noone have a winch

Wow, sorry I wasn't sitting in front of my computer at 3:59 AM........

Anyway, I have a late-90's Ramsey ProPlus 9000 on my 1-ton K5. It sat unused for several years but has worked great after I cleaned up the brushes on the motor and the other electrical contacts. The snatch block has yet to be used but this winch has pulled my heavy Blazer up some pretty steep hills and over some rocks without any issues. The line speed seems decent........far from the slowest, but definitely not the fastest either.

One guy has a Ramsey REP8000 bought back in '85. It's been used a lot since then and just now needs some new components.....not bad for 20+ years of service.

Another guy has one of the high speed Warn 9500's on a Jeep. No problem pulling him around and it's definitely fast, though almost too fast because it's hard to control under light or no-load conditions. Under no-load you can let go of the switch but it will still reel in another 3-4' of cable before actually stopping.

A couple of other guys have the cheap Milemarker 12k winches. They are pretty slow but seem to have good power. One guy has already replaced the burntup motor after only a few short pulls (I believe it left him stranded when the winch died), but the motor was replaced and it's been working fine since. You do have watch how the cable is being reeled in very close as there is very little extra room on the reel. If you are pulling off the side it doesn't take many wraps of the cable before the wrapped cable will hit the support rods and bend them or break them off (may break off the mounting ear on the winch body).

Warn 9500xp

I use a warn 9500xp and it move my 5200# K10 no problem, even have pull out a 9K# truck out of a bad spot with a busted front axle one time. Single line on the top layer. Moved slow but never stalled.

I have two 8274's and an M8000. The 8274 on the rear of my buggy was used and abused for MANY years before I ever owned it, and I've put it to the test year after year for the last 4-5 years. One particularly nasty labor day run, it completed over 30 recoverys with out flinching. on a Sub 6500 lb rig, Id not hesitate to purchase another old used warn 8274. Anything much heavier than that and I'd be looking to sacrifice speed for brute power, IE a 12000lb or greater warn.

After winching out of some deep washes without the engine running I knew I'd never want a PTO or Hydraulic for self recovery. (the 12v electric hyd. pump is an interesting idea though, I'd like to see that put into practice by someone) After winching some rigs through miles of swamp with two 8274's hooked end to end, I knew line speed would always be one of the highest prioritys when selecting future winches)

I agree.... I have a ramsey patriot 15k in rear.. and would some day do a hydraulic mm 10.5 k up front... if truck shuts off I cant use the winch.. well I got bigger problems and dont want to go any further..... however electric in rear should get me out.... unless my ruts filled in and no tree within 90'!!!! :haha:

I've stalled my 8274 a couple of times on a single line trying to winch out of a mud hole and I only weigh in at 5800lb.

8274 has never left my 7500 lb burb stranded on a single line pull :thumb:

i might buy that mm for the rear and do the16.5 up front but i want a tube bumper rather than what most have the one aksub has is just to bulky

I would think about reversing that descision. The reason I say that is that when getting stuck you usually are in deep water or mud up front. If pulling forward you would need the hydro due to the fact that the electric won't work under water. Also if the engine dies you need to pull it out backwards and the hrdro won't work with the engine not running where the electric will. Just my opinion though. I run a MM 10,500 up front and was running a Warn 8000 in the rear till I go another MM 10,500 last winter. Will run one off of an electric Hydr motor in case the engine dies.

Not always the case, I fried an ECU off of my old, now gone, Holley Poopjection half way though Swamp Lake ( a 13 mile challenging trail) and my 9.5xp got the job done, btw don't skimp on a battery, but 16.5 #'er would have gotten the job done better. IMHO

Anyone have any hands on experience with the 9K MM electrics? As much as I'd like a 8274, the difference between $500 and $1200 is the difference between buying a winch in the near future, and wheeling without one for a year or two. I don't plan on using it everytime I go out, I'd just like to have it for piece of mind.

i have an 8274 that is lacking some power... i've gone through it completely cleaning and replacing parts where needed, 3 of the 4 solenoids are original and so is the motor, this thing is ancient do i just need a new motor or what? and about about adapting a larger motor to my winch, i've seen that mentioned some where...
