What are people using for winter camping tents? My friends and I are getting ready to make a dedicated attempt at some ski camping this year. I'm looking for a lightweight 2 person tent for backpacking. One of my friends already has an llbean 4 season, but it is an elephant and only holds 2 people. I'm looking for something very minimalist, but I don't think a bivy is a good solution, because of gear storage.

Sierra designs. Anything by them will perform exactly how you want for the next million years. I'm super happy with mine- it's about 13 years old. With the fly it's plenty warm.

Once we get hitched what's yours is mine

Couldn't agree more! I picked mine up in 99. Watch campmor and you can get great deals for last year's models. I picked up a $700 four season convertible for $280. Warm in the winter, cool in the summer and weighs 6 pounds for a 3 person. *winning*

Alright, after doing way to much research, and buying 3 tents to set up and try out. The rei mountain 3, arete 2 and ems traverse. I have decided I don't really like any of them. I will be returning them shortly.

I definitely need a double wall tent. A single wall makes me way too nervous for New England slush storms. Even though the sierra designs are very lightweight and offer a lot of space, this rules out their converts, which I do find to be attractive tents. If you were somewhere that was really cold and dry I think they would be an excellent choice.

Unfortunately REI no longer has a lifetime warranty policy. This totally stinks, because I used to buy everything from them.

I had been trying to keep my price range below $400, because when I first started browsing it seemed there were some great options at that price point. Now, I think I am better off just finding the tent I will be most happy with. At the moment, I am most seriously considering the hilleberg allak. It will give me and a second person our own doors and storage space. When getting ready for skiing, having your own space is really important.

It's pricey, but this guys video really sold me on the functionality of their tents. Setting up the tent and rainfly in one go will make a huge difference when trying to setup in snow.

you should look at NorthFace stuff... pretty highend, my ex-girlfriend had a real nice one.. quality stuff...

I agree, they make some top notch stuff, but all their 4 season tents are single layer with no true rainfly.

didn't know that.. just assumed they had something in that department too..

Yeah they have quite a few options, but I think a lot of these tents are used in very cold and very dry climates. The EMS tent, and reasonably so, seemed to offer the best rain protection. That is why I ordered it up to check it out. Unfortunately it requires solid ground staking to take its full shape. I want something totally freestanding so that its easier to setup and is not dependent on the correct soil for putting in stakes.

I just went with a new Eureka last month for my fishing trip.. heard they where decent..

it performed well, especially considering the one morning I woke up and it was floating in 3" of water.. :eek1: :haha: with not a drop inside.. :woot: thank god for the good seam seal job and waterproof spraying I gave it... :haha:
