Winters Sidewinder 4L80e shift cable too long

I actually bought a Sonax shaft because mine had the longer shaft for neutral safety switch that I removed. I don't remember them having the options you link now. Obviously mine wasn't intended to fix the shifter problem.
Ok so you had that shaft already so that rules that out. Maybe Dean misunderstood me and thought I meant the shaft was too long or something so I need to call him back and tell him this does not fix the issue.

I'm wondering if they changed the shaft. For the life of me I can't find that receipt to know for sure what I ordered. I put that transmission in last spring. I just don't remember it saying anything about "manual shift". I only remember it being to converting long shaft to short shaft.

My transmission came out of a '95 truck, but it wasn't the original transmission because it had been replaced by a reman'd unit 10,000 miles before I bought the donor truck.

I didn't have any issues. Well...i drove it for a few days and failed to hook up the neutral safety switch as i was waiting on parts to cure the reverse light problem. When roaring out of the house one day and fired the truck up which was found later not to be in neutral...that being said the truck launched into my garage wall causing about 1k of damage. Lol.

For what its worth my 96 4l80e would not line the gates up at all. I ended up making a different length arm to get the throw to be correct. I did not make a new cable mount bracket as I just made the arm different.

I thought about doing that too. You have any pics of that arm you made?

FYI @Tnsejed I heard you met both my brothers this last weekend on Eagle Rock trail

I did. I was doing a shakedown on my rig with Rob, one of the members here from the springs. He was in his K5. Then all of a sudden on Saran Wrap we saw two other Squarebody rigs. Was nuts. I never see squares.

Heres my setup.

Yeah, my brother (the one on the rockwells/47's) told me about that. It was also a bit of a shakedown run for my oldest brothers blue 78 K5 you saw after swapping t-cases (in fact, he swapped the old SYE 241 that used to be in my blazer into his), new shafts and a locker too. My brother sent me a pic he took of your rig and I instantly recognized it.

I assume the arm you made is longer? Do you have measurements or a side by side comparison to the one that was supplied with the shifter?

I'd have to disassemble it to get an accurate measurement. If I recall correctly it was longer and clocked differently. I machined the broached section, but you could easily grind it out with a die grinder, or just weld on a new end to the existing arm.

Here's my chitty attempt to make one thats clocked differently out of some steel bar scrap I had. I left the 2 holes already cut the scrap which gives me more adjust-ability. Unfortunately, I rushed the slotted hole and made it too big. I have maybe 5 minutes into it as you can tell. I can try to make another with the correct bends and correct size of slotted hole along with corners ground and paint.

ANOTHER option is this guy from Lokar. It allows infinite positions of clocking and distance from trans shift shaft. I was worried it was straight but if you look closely, its recessed at the shaft area and its suppose to clear the 4L80. Only problem is its price of $55. They sell another one with nice shifter rod and heim joints for $61. Flaming River and Summit also make something similar. Flaming River is like $93 and Summits is almost same price as Lokar. CPP looks like theirs is $38. I might just do that option and be done with it.
Lokar ACA-1802 (arm only)
Lokar ACA-1800 (arm and heim joints)
Flaming River FR20010RK
CPP CPTSL
Summit SUM-760008

The "infinite" adjustment is nice. $55 is just enough to make a person hesitate, but not so much to make you immediately say no.

I just ordered the CPP part along with some other things from Summit. I think this will be the fix without relocating the cable back.

Let us know how you think that part does

Will do!

I also left a message with Dean with Winters Performance to let him know on this. Last time we spoke, he said he was going to update the instructions to mention the clocking issue and the sonnax part but I think this is a better option and you don't need to pull the pan. They should offer the shifter with this billet piece instead of the one that could be clocked wrong or have that as an option.

Here's an article on the Lokar with 4l80e, shifter coming from the front, but CPP kit looks exactly the same.

Did you ever put the CPP part on? Did it work? If so, I may order it today.

@Kay86K5 Sorry but before I could install it, I moved to a new house and packed it. Its somewhere in a box and have not cone across it yet... I'm almost certain this will fix the issue.

@Kay86K5
Finally got that arm installed and removed the bracket I made. That did the trick! I used the same ball/socket on the arm but had to use a couple small washers. I'm not sure if the heim joints would fit the winters cable and never tried. And I used a couple thin washers to space out the brass center a little. Shifts much better like its suppose to.

Nice! And it goes into all gears now?

I'm gonna get that little kit ordered so I can finally get my shifter working properly. Thanks for the follow up! :waytogo:
