wiring a GPS and power ports.

I have a GPS I want to power in the truck. Should i get a female power port for the GPS like this http://www.powerwerx.com/adapter-cables/cigarette-lighter-socket-fused-bare.html or should i just hard wire it in to a ignition source so it wont drain the power? I plan to install a power inverter that runs off a power source i have in the cab.

What GPS receiver is it? Some are not 12v and the cigaret lighter plug is a voltage reducer. If you hard wire one of those, it will fry it.

I ended up hard wiring one of these in to the truck http://battery-world.amazonwebstore...affic_src=froogle&utm_medium=CSE&utm_source=f and then running the GPs and inverter that a friend gave me. I have a power distribution block in the cab that i will eventually hook a cobra inverter up to and mount in the cab.

Just remember, the size battery cable they reccommend should be considered a minimum size.
And all connections have to be clean and tight.
Inverters are nice, but you can't overcome the laws of electronics. You are on the wrong side of the power equation.
For every amp of 120 volt power you get, you have to put in over 10 amps of 12 volt DC.
And since watts equals volts times amps, drawing 1200 watts at 120 volts is about 10 amps, and that is going to require over 100 amps of 12 volt.

In other words, heavy wires. And heavy wires will start fires if they short out. So make sure the cables are well protected.
