Not sure if I'm posting in the right place but here goes. Has anyone here ever completely rewired their trucks? Considering it since I have a lot of shorts and wires that go nowhere and rather than chase it all down, I want to rewire? How hard is it to do this?

Blue max, I rewired my 1st gen 4x4 jimmy this summer.I used a 18 circuit 4x4 Harness from Painless. Its worked out pretty well. They have okay instructions and their technical support is helpful if you have a question. I don't have much wiring experience, I don't even know how to use a multimeter(which I recommend becoming friends with).

It took about a week of shade tree'ing it to get the old wiring stripped out and the new put in.

Some suggestions:
MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THE OLD WIRING AND CONNECTORS YOUR RIPPED OUT. Its a great way to remind your self what goes where and it often has pieces you can't do without.

Learn how to use a multi-meter. I managed without it but it would certainly have helped.

Take pictures of how things used to be before removing. That really helped my piece of mind.

Plan out how everything will go before cutting and finally installation

Get some plastic wire loom. Its much cheaper at lowes or home depot than at the autoparts store. It really cleans up the engine bay.

Feel free to ask any questions you might have. I hope this helps..:D

I used a suburban harness (78 -80) which was still in fair shape in my 74 blazer. I still had to rebuild the engine compartment part, but I used a wire diagram in a Hayes manual to figure out where every thing went. I photocopied each page and taped the pages together and spent weeks studying it.

I ditched about 90% of the factory harness, and created my own system...eliminating all fuses, fusable links and other non essential stuff.. going with breakers to protect all my circuits...

when the truck comes back out, I'll have pretty much eliminated the other 10%, except the column harness...

I've never come close to tackling a job of this magnitude. I'm gonna have to research this and get a plan.:D

Make sure you look into and talk to Chevy305 and Ryoken. Ryoken is a master at this stuff, and the kit that Chevy305 used is slick. It is from EZWiring and is much cheaper than the Painless set, but includes nearly everything the Painless kit does. I plan to use this kit later this year to completely rewire my Blazer and clean up the mess that PO's have created.

Ya go to ezwiring.com and get their 21 circuit universal wiring harness. The fuse block is a direct replacement of the factory ones in our trucks and every wire is labled about every foot or so. That alone makes the harness sooo much easier to work with.
Click on my build thread in my sig. The wiring is on the last 6 pages or so.

What's this wiring stuff you are talking about
& where does it go ???

I had to start from scratch when I built my Jimmy , so I went shopping at the local salvage yards & picked up some good wiring harnesses for a little more than the time it took to remove them (not a big seller around here)
You can pretty much mix & match ,to get the accessories or options you want, using wiring from a Blazer,Jimmy, Suburban or a pickup as long as the years are similar .
Just double check that the connectors are compatable & you are good to go.
