Edge of insanity
Hey guys...well since I am nearing my Christmas break from school, I will be having roughly a month to tear into my truck. My first endeavor will be the wiring harness which I need some input on for suggestions.
Here is the scoop.
My project truck is an 85 m1008 cucv.
1) I just recently swapped cabs from an 86 half ton gasser.
2) I am tossing the th400 for a built 700r4 and keeping the 6.2.
3) Removing all of the cucv wiring such as blackout light system etc etc to simplify things.
4) For accessories- I plan to convert to a/c, installing a radio(maybe a small system), electric fuel pump and windstar fans. Along with installing a second rear tank with a switch valve, and power windows/locks/keyless entry, and aux lighting in the bed.

Now, I already have all the parts, with some of them already installed in the truck, with exception to the wiring harness. Seeing as this truck will be a frankenstein truck, I am kind of up in the air on what I should do about the wiring. As I see it>>

Option 1:
Just combine the two harnesses(cucv and donor cab) together making 1 functioning harness. Pro-it will be cheap and low budget. Con-It will be very time consuming trying to make something out of a mess with all the splicing, tracing shorts, the hassle of stripping it all apart, plus it will still be 20 yr old wiring.

Option 2:
Strip all the wiring off of the donor fuse block, and rewire/terminate/label each system in the truck one at a time ex interior, rear ext, front ext, engine, etc. Pro-would be brand new material to work with, run wire from accessory to the fuse block-snip off extra and terminate. I could retrace the wiring looms where I want to, clean it up and simplify things some. Cons-I think it will turn into a nightmare once I get to the interior trying to rewire all of the a/c, ignition, relays etc etc.

Option 3:
Get an aftermarket universal wiring harness. I would pb go with a 21 or 22 circuit kit that is preterminated and assembled. Pros-Wires will be gm color coded and labelled every 6 inches(alieving a huge PITA in itself), and even have the ability for gm collumn connectors prewired into the harness. Basically just place the box under the dash where I want it to go, run the wiring looms to designated accessory, wire it up, still all new wiring/fuse block. Having a 21 or 22 circuit system also gives me room in the future to expand, and the company even gives an option for mini-fuses for a more compact style. Con-...really, the money cost is negligable IMO seeing as doing something like rewire a fuse block from scratch can nickel and dime me to death. I cant think of many cons-but Im sure there is something Im not considering.

Considering all of this- I want to hear what you all have to say- rip this idea apart(constructive criticism and suggestions)-and then let me know what you would do if it were your truck. As of this moment, I am leaning towards the 3rd option.

How much time and $$$ do you have? Anytime you rely on a donor, you are dealing with the PO hack's and 20 year old wiring.

If you have the $$, I would go with fresh wire in the thing. You would know what you have and how it's wired. You know everything is fused properly and the correct rated wire is running the accessory as designed.

I would definitely run new wire if you are going to wire a 21 or 22 circuits. You can go Painless with an additional block and get 18 to 20 circuits. The Painless have generic and custom setups.

Just my $0.02.

Here are some of sources that get posted over and over:

See thats the way I figured it as well...but the harness I have in mind is WAY less than the painless harness, like 1/3 the price or less, and is a compact design with mini-fuses. I think the fuse box or junction box is like 3" square. If I had to choose the painless harness, it would be a no brainer b/c I cant really justify shelling out $500 for a harness I would have to mod to a diesel harness in the first place, but again there harnesses are made specifically for the chevy trucks.

Anybody else have any experience wiring a vehicle??

PLEASE, what harness and where are you going to get it, i will likely need to redo my blazer's wiring within the year. it would save me time and coin, im in the same spot you are, college student with little time and money

thanks,
rick

Take a look at the hotrod link and compare prices with what you are looking at. The Hot Rod company prices are a lot less than painless.

I haven't used them so I don't know the quality.

Here is a link to the wiring harness company I am looking at. The harness I want to use is the ez mini 20 harness.

www.ezwiring.com

I just sent them an email earlier to ask about the quality of the wire they use, and some other misc questions about assembly, soldering or crimping wires etc etc to get an idea of the quality of their wiring harness. Price is great, but I am getting some more info on quality to ease the decision in my head. I can even get past crimping all the connections since I have all the soldering equip to go back, pop the cover off and git-r-done. But this is basically what I want, labelled wire, compact new fuse box, flexible location inside the cab, some room to expand with accessories, and ready to wire up to all of my existing switches for everything.

There is also NO doubt that the wiring harness setup over on that hotrod link is top notch, but again a little pricey, and too many bells and whistles for the amount of circuits I would like to have. Anti theft??? Nah, keyless entry is as far as I am going for security other than maybe a cutoff switch somewhere.

So what do you(everybody) think of that harness and the company??

Well after doing a quick search, over on the protouring.com board, there are atleast half a dozen guys who have used the harness with great success. Even a few guys that have used both the painless wiring universal harness, and the ezwiring harnesses, and they admitted honestly not being able to tell a difference in quality. The only difference mentioned was factory connectors for the steering collumn and ignition that were in the painless harness, were not in the ezwiring harness....but thats simple to wire up, I already have a few harnesses to butcher up anyways.

Awesome, just got a reply from them, pretty good to have a 3 hr reply time on a Wednesday night, turns out they use all gauge correct GLX wire-that is labelled for the circuit its for. Looks more and more like these guys will be getting some money from me pretty soon. Anybody else have any experience or input?

NICE
thanks for doing the leg work, you saved me time and money, well at least time, im so cheap i would have found it eventually

Well if it was me I would go out to my parents garage open my cabinet and take out my NOS GM harness and use it. I picked it up on eBay for $79.00 still in the GM box.

So did you buy the truck from the military or some civy? If you got it from military it shouldn't be all hacked up. There are plans for making them 12 volt.

Yeah I have seen those nos harnesses on ebay too, and even looked to see what was on there, but nothing even close to what I need for my frankenstein of a truck. It is a m1008 that I got with 40k on the clock, got it from a county auction from a state park east of Houston(they got it from the mil). They did some hack 12v conversion on it, plus the cucv fuse blocks are so basic I couldnt have used it if I wanted to, they have a few slots for accessories, but I cant get 20+ circuits out of it like I am needing.
