WIX and NAPA GOLD

just happened on this thread today dec -2024... news to me!

i used to buy quite a few napa gold filters... i removed one a few weeks ago from my blazer, and was very surprised when the entire can collapsed with very little twisting force. i thought i was going to have a big problem removing it, but luckily i never torque them down when installing, and was able to crush/lay into it with a big pair of channel locks to get it cracked free.

NEVER had a problem with a napa gold filter before. i typically try to run k&N or wix, and would settle for napa gold... apparently napa is now off of my list

I picked a K&N oil filter for my k30 oil change, some books call for the tall oil filter some call, for a short for a LQ9/LQ4. Mine always called for a short when I look it up online. I found others saying the tall filter is okay to use on any ls engine. Is it better than wix? I dunno. But I'm going to run it.

I always run the tall LS filter on everything unless I happen to only have the short one then that's what it gets. I stock both at work.

I actually like the short filter on the crew cab mainly because it keeps it away from the exhaust on my setup. Plus I'm changing the oil yearly because it's no where near 5000 miles so the filter capacity isn't an issue.

I've run short filters always I went this way because it was a good price. I do like the Bosch filters and have run those in the past. I plan ot put alot of miles on this truck before blazer fest so I can make sure everything works.

I’ve been using the MicroGuard Selects from O’Reilly on my Toyota. Get good reviews and spec better than the WIX equivalent. Cheaper too.

The Yukon I have a couple years worth of made in the USA WIX XP’s I bought in bulk from RockAuto last year.

They use the K&N a lot on engine masters. I think it won one of their shootouts too. They're fantastic on everything I've ever used them on. That being said as far as oil filter length, this might be heresy to some, but I've just not seen anything that's shown me there is a true benefit to having the long one other than that's just what everyone used to run. The technology in those filters is so advanced now I imagine that length of the filter doesn't matter all that much. I've also noticed that even the length of the filter changes amongst brands. I ran into this when I was doing service on my 4-stroke boat motors. Just my two cents. I'm a Mobile1 or K&N guy at the moment. I'll give a tip of the cap to Napa and Wix, those have always been good to me too.

I run Wix on all ours (2 qt version on the Blazer) but I’m thinking of switching to K&N for my CTD, the filter is in a really tight spot and I’m wondering if that hex on the filter would be good enough to use.

From what I've seen and read, modern engines with functional PCV systems and good air filters won't need the extra filter capacity that older engines did.

The caveat is running an open element like a K&N that are proven to not filter as well or a damaged/malfunctioning air inlet tract or PCV system. In that case, the added filter capacity will help but you're still doing a lot of damage other places inside the engine so I doubt oil filter capacity will play much of a roll in longevity.

Am I the last one to find out WIX no longer makes the NAPA Gold oil filters?
So I have been watching this thread and researching the whole time and finally I decided to go talk to my napa store owner and get the low down.
Apparently WIX has been buying out all these companies so they bought Baldwin and I can't remember the other one now. So technically they are all still WIX.
Now for the origin of the factory he gave me some pointers, I will take some pictures to show how to know.
I will follow up with a post.

YEARS ago I went to NAPA to get some Timken bearings.

They only had the Chinese bearings.

Guy at the counter told me NAPA had a policy change that they only bought USA products if they couldn't get the cheaper stuff for better profit margins.

I'm sure he wasn't involved in that level of purchasing but I did have to go elsewhere to get the USA bearings, just saying.

Just be aware K&N filters like to crack at the hex feature and dump oil on the road.
