So I took this:

. . . . . and bought this:

Now I am slowly fixing some of the stuff on it and such. Any questions? Feel free to ask.

Martin

What are you gonna do to it?
Anything?

Fix it up. It needs a lot of work. The first thing I did was take out the pathetic little Grant steering wheel that was in it, and put the old steering wheel from my Suburban in it. Then I let the windows down for a couple weeks to air out the mouse piss stink. Gave it a real thorough cleaning, changed the oil, powerwashed the **** out of it (changed the color in the process), removed the old Pioneer tape deck that didn't work, and cut out the dash to install a new Pioneer deck (Walmart special).

Martin

First thing I did was remove the cheesy bug deflector and power wash the **** out of the whole thing. It was originally a brown pickup, then someone did a little bit of ****ty bodywork (it was full of mud), and painted it white. When I got to power washing it, the white paint peeled right off, so I blew it all off and took it down to the primer. Some places the primer came off too, revealing the brown paint. Then I jerry rigged the bumper back on. The truck had had a snow plow on it, and the bumper mounts were removed and the plow mounts welded to the frame. Seeing as I didn't have the bumper mounts, I just left the plow mounts on for now, drilled four holes in the bumper, and bolted it to the plow mounts. It is a 1982 (1981 - 82 Chevrolet pickups have the turn signals mounted in the front bumper), so I had to do something for front turn signals because they were broken out of the bumper that came with the truck. So I bought a couple cheap trailer lights and zip tied them in place in the front bumper. Not real classy, but it makes it legal to drive.

k30frwashed.jpg

Real classy huh?

Martin

Went out to a farm that belongs to a guy I know, to get some parts from a pickup parked in the tree line. Literally. I was hoping to get some marker lights for the roof as well to replace my broken ones, but the ones he had were a different style. He also had a 1981 or 1982 with a good front bumper and turn signals, so I might have to go back and get that one of these days.

Got two doors, a split rear window, a front seat, and the carpet for $150. More than I thought they were really worth, but no big deal. I needed a driver side door because the other night I slammed the door when I got out, and it shattered the window glass. I could have just replaced the window glass, but the door skin was so rusty it was peeling away from the door. The passenger door wasn't terrible, but this one was better, and it had a mirror on it.

New seat, carpet, better steering wheel, much cleaner.

Took out the old glass.
splitwindow.jpg

Cleaned up the split window and installed the rubber.

All washed up, with new doors.

I blew the green paint off the passenger side door, I will have to get the driver's side door this week.
frontrightwashinton.jpg

I also put the tailgate that came with the truck on. Looks much better than the air gate it had on it.

I was in Kansas for work one week, and got a text asking about who painted my truck. This is what I found when I got home.

Loaned it to a kid tonight to go beat on it. He called me back an hour later. Some how he blew up the SM465. I now have plans for the weekend.

The spare tranny that came with the truck that "shifts great, recently rebuilt, just parted the truck out", is kind of a pos. Had to clean out the giant mouse nest that filled the entire inside of the tranny, and the shifter forks have no plastic on them. . . . . . .

Here is inside the gear case after I took off the shift tower, and the PTO covers. Then dug out the mouse nest by hand, power washed out the case, hot tanked it, and then blew it out with compressed air. I should have taken a picture before hand.
sm465.jpg

I think that is what went wrong with the one in the truck. Those snap rings break and the input gear on the counter cluster disengages. It also popped out of second a lot, and that is the second gear counter gear. I have heard that will cause that. A friend of mine from Milford just put a piece of pipe between the two gears. I have heard that someone makes an actual machined piece for that.
sm465a.jpg

There is the shifter fork, and the last of the plastic hanging off to the side.
sm465b.jpg

I don't think you can see it there, but the case is cracked around that bolt hole. Someone had tried to JB weld it. That made me giggle.
sm465c.jpg

Oh, and this was just for ****s and giggles.
k30v10.jpg

Martin

Here is the heavy bastard on the ground. I had forgot how much I hated taking those things in and out. I remember now.
np205.jpg

The problem lies inside that adapter housing. Though the gears on the front of the counter shaft are quite loose against the snap rings.
np205c.jpg

I don't know if you can see it, but here is the broken ****.
np205b.jpg

np205a.jpg

Here the greasy bitch is before I washed her off. Yes, my lazy ass used a dolly instead of carrying it.
np205d.jpg

Pulled the crossmember and adapter housing out today. Want to see broken parts? Okay, here is what fell out of the housing when I put it on the ground.
sm465F.jpg

Here are the pieces after I cleaned them up.
SM465G.jpg

They should look like that minus the cracks.
sm465E.jpg

SM465H.jpg

Then I cleaned up the adapter really well and beaded it.
sm465l.jpg

As she currently sits.
sm465m.jpg

That is the one that actually came in the truck when I bought it (not when GM built it, the casting date on the transfer case is 1980, the mounting adaptor has a casting date of 3 (either '73 or '83), and the pickup is an '82).

I was just cleaning it up to put back in, and then I decided to twin stick it, and pretty soon I had it completely disassembled. I do stupid **** like that sometimes.

np205-1.jpg

Martin

Bought this greasy setup for $150.
np205-2.jpg

np205a-1.jpg

Took a lot of powerwashing to get to that point.
np205b-1.jpg

Took the transfercase off. . . . .
sm465-2.jpg

. . . . and put it in there.
np205c-1.jpg

Then it got a paint job before the Husker Game.

These drunk people. I had to haul them down to 10th and Charleston to take them tailgating, then before the game started, they called me and told me to come pick them up, and bring a keg shell so we could pick one up for the game.
box-1.jpg

This is before we got to Amens to grab the keg.

Here is another random picture from Facebook. I think they took this when I was inside getting the keg.

Installed.
frontshaft.jpg

Bought a cheapo mirror from Autozone or whatever. It was a piece of ****. Everything was made of plastic. The tube that goes from the mounting bracket to the mirror was made of plastic with a metal piece on the end with the thread insert. It came loose on installation. So I took the old one (it was a clamp on, not bolt on mirror), and drilled and tapped it. A lot of effort, and it looks ugly, but I can see behind me now.

mirror2.jpg

mirror3.jpg

Then I did some stuff to the engine. It is a pain in the ass to work on with all that lift, so I lowered it temporarily.
flattires.jpg

Got a toolbox, so hopefully there will be less stuff bouncing around in the box of my truck the next time I take it somewhere.
1217081924.jpg

Got it for $5 less than that!
1217081948.jpg

Took off this old air cleaner lid.
1216082029.jpg

. . . and replaced it with this! haha, sorry I am a ricer. I accidentally stumbled onto this on Craigslist while looking for a toolbox, and it was only $25.

For everyone who was bitching about my busted ass clearance lights.
1218082257.jpg

I even wired them up.

That tricky UPS guy!
0105091656.jpg

I'm excited.
0105091658.jpg

Lifted the piece of **** by the bumper brackets.
0105091759.jpg

Works pretty nice.
0105091800.jpg

Got them installed. I am going to have to cut my tailpipes off, and reweld them at a different angle.
0105092119a.jpg

Slightly raked. I was hoping it would be taller than that, with the 4" blocks still installed.
0105092107.jpg

Sorry about the ****ty camera phone pics. My camera takes okay pictures, but these were with my crappy LG work phone.
0105092119.jpg

Slightly better pics.

Right rear shackle.

Left rear shackle.

So the front right side of my K30 has seemed lower than it use to and now it started making a banging noise. I crawled underneath to see what the problem was, and found this.
0118091645.jpg

Notice the rub mark?
0118091645a.jpg

Poor quality pictures, but I need a new shackle hanger.
0118091646.jpg

Jake was right, I need these:
http://www.offroaddesign.com/catalog/FUSH.htm

I also got the tail pipes cut off and rewelded for a case of beer. While they were at it, they cut off the factory exhaust hangers, and used aftermarket ones.

These showed up today. When I ordered them, I asked them if there was a referral discount, and then dropped John's name, because I knew he had just ordered his lift kit from them. I figured it was worth a shot. The lady on the phone didn't know, so she put me on hold, and asked someone. She came back and told me no. Oh well. Well in the package were those two big ass ORD stickers, and on the receipt it says: Item Code Promo, Description Stickers for referral---, Price Each 0.00, Amount 0.00T.

haha, thanks John.

Free. I hooked it up (into the stock setup), it works.

That didn't prevent me from getting stuck for the first time since I owned it. Just being stupid. . .

When I was back home this weekend, I cobbed some parts off of my old 1975 K20 for Billy.

Bed rails, they are heavy built bastards.
0223091628.jpg

Took the bumper off. This is the plow mounts that were welded on the truck when I got it. Right side.
0223091748.jpg

This is the left side, after I notched it with the torch to make room for the bumper brackets I grabbed of my K20.
0223091748a.jpg

This is the bumper bracket from my 1976 K20, bolted do the frame rail.
0224091741a.jpg

I then realized I must have left one of the bumper brackets behind, and that the outer bumper brackets are different on a 1982 K30, than they are on a 1975 K20. Hopefully if I get that 1985 K10 this weekend, I can rob the brackets off of it. I also mounted a tow hook to the left frame rail, that had previously been on my 1975.

Can anyone identify these lights? Another part that came off of my K20.
0223092240a.jpg

Wired up, and turned on.
0223092240.jpg

Outside when I got home.

Side view, they may be cheesy, but they light the engine compartment up nice.
0223092307.jpg

Notice the cable running to the carburetor linkage?

Here is what controls that cable.

I really like these, the cables are plenty long.

Notice the flat tire ^? That is the tire that I blew off the rim at Tuttle last year. The dry rotted sidewall started leaking. The other three tires have tubes, but I had a hell of a time trying to find a replacement tube, so I had to take both tires off the front of Billy, and break them down. I wanted to patch the sidewall on the one, and I needed to check the tube in the other one for a part number. It is a Firestone tube, and Cross Dillion will have a new one for me tomorrow.
05-11-09_1442.jpg

No one wanted to patch the sidewall, so I had to do it myself.
05-11-09_1647.jpg

Here is a closeup of the leaky area after I patched it. Nice sidewalls huh?

So the right bedside was crushed in right in front of the tail light. Due to this, I have caught the tail light on multiple things, and broken it repetitively. I just straightened the tin work out around the tail light the best I could, and mounted a new tail light tonight.

Here you can see how far it sticks out from the bedside. Tree branches love to catch that.

09-18-09_2016.jpg

Here is the view from the rear of the same thing.

09-18-09_2018.jpg

Here is a side view, notice I buffed up the paint.

09-18-09_2017.jpg

It's ugly, but so is the rest of the truck. That should make the tail light last a little longer.

09-18-09_2031.jpg

View from the front. You can see the bedside is really crushed in, so I only got to weld the top and the bottom, I am not to worried about it though.

Here is the view from the rear.

If a lot of it doesn't make sense, it is because I just copy/pasted the posts off of my local board. I also combined several posts at a time from there, into one post here. Does anyone else wheel a K30 crew cab on here, besides me?
