WL: 1988 V10 Suburban

It was a beautiful day to put it back together. I'm afraid the cam might be eating this distributor gear as well. Anyone ever heard of a bad cam eating distributor gears???

Adventures in broke down stupidity.

So I drove my Suburban to work today, because the starter took a dive in the CUCV. On the way in, I turned on my iPod to listen to some loud tunes. It was cutting in and out due to the draw from the amplifier, and the fact that I hadn't noticed till the radio cutting out drew my attention to the voltemeter, my alternator is in the same situation as the starter in the CUCV. It's only ten miles to town and back, and I was already running late, so I just kept heading that direction.

Work went fine, even closed a little early. Went out to the Suburban after I was done, and it started right up, but spun over noticeably slower than normal. Due to no alternator, and the fact that the moon was shining brightly, I decided to make the run home sans headlights. I met one vehicle as I was cresting a hill, but I could see their headlights before they cleared the hill, so I kicked mine on. The rest of the trip went uneventfully on the highway. Then I got to the gravel road. We had a bit of a blizzard over the weekend, and the road has not been cleared except from me blowing through it in one spot. As I was coming over the hill there, I thought to myself that I should both, A. slow down, and B. turn on my headlights to go through the drift. Beings that I am a stubborn jackass, I couldn't even agree with myself, so I barreled on ahead.

I should have listened to myself. When I hit the drift, I was just off to the side of the path I had blown through. Hitting the hard packed snow kicked me sideways, and before I could get it corrected, the snow (and my excessive speed) pulled me into the drifted shut ditch. That killed the engine, which would now not restart due to the dead battery at this point. I called my wife, and told her to come get me. She married me, she knows what an idiot I am.

So she drove out and picked me up with her Jeep. I had her drive me the 3/4 of a mile back to my house, and drop me off at my 1990 Blazer. I asked her to follow me back out to the Suburban after I got the Blazer started. Well the Blazer hasn't moved in a couple months, and apparently the last time I was by it, I rolled up the windows to keep the snow out. I also forgot to turn the key switch off after rolling up said windows....

Which leads to me having her bring the Jeep over to the front of my Blazer which I now have to jump start. I was really on a roll at this point. I was going to try to push it down the hill and dump the clutch, but the tires were frozen to the ground and sitting in some small, hard packed drifts. I get it jump started, and head for the Suburban. When I get there I have my wife park the Jeep, and get in the Suburban to steer. I then yank it out, which took several tugs due to the Suburban not running.

I was going to jump start the Suburban and drive it home, but instead I pushed it down the hill and dumped the clutch, which fired it off. I drove it into the yard, and hooked the battery charger up to it. I then had the wife drive me back out to the road, and drove my Blazer home. It is now parked next to the Suburban, with a set of jumper cables hooked between the two rigs, to trickle charge both batteries over night.

I am an idiot.

Alas, no pictures, it was dark, and I don't think my wife would be any more impressed with me if I was horsing around taking pictures during the whole ordeal.

Yeah had wiring issues in my k20 last year, wasn't charging. Had similar issue happen, gotta love stoppid adventures

I broke down today and decided to replace the heater core instead of parting it out. I also fixed a broken brake line, removed some shoddy wiring where some one tapped in for trailer lights, changed the oil, and a few other random repairs.

I found that my intake air duct from the radiator support to the air cleaner came loose and melted on the header. So now I need a new one of those.

Martin, you don't happen to know if those later tbi air filter housings will fit on a quadrajet do you?

If you bend the mount/locating tabs I'd assume they would. I can check.

Dont worry much about it. I just like those housings the best but never tried to put one one a carb.

Not that I know of but maybe? Oh you know what, I don't think they did. I think they used ones with the same big oval snorkel but when they went to tbi they incorporated the dog leg into the filter housing.

I think they did these in the early mid 70's,

To bad you're so far away, l found a complete rust free, dental free suburban shell that I could get for $100. And looking at the pictures you could use it.

You don't happen to have the plastic intake air duct from said shell, do you?
