WL: 1990 K5 (California to Nebraska on 38" rubber. (WARNING: Lots of Pics))

Had a blast. The Jeep guys were impressed with it.

Martin

Duh, jeep guys think dana 44s are tough.

:haha: That's what I was thinking, your rig does actually look impressive, no doubting that. But saying the Jeep guys were impressed is like saying "the "sport compact" people thought my car was fast"!

Generally I dislike most Jeep guys as a rule of thumb, but these guys were all pretty cool. They were all willing to actually beat on their Jeeps, instead of just polishing the wheels, taking the top off, and driving around town........

So I went to replace the lockout today. Turns out I also snapped the outer axle shaft. What is the best place to buy the parts to convert it to 35 spline? Where do you guys get bearings and seals and such from? I want to throw a stock 30 spline back in there for now, but I am not sure how bad the spindle is either.

Here is a picture of the group of Jeeps I went out with when I broke my axle.

A couple other Jeeps and I had wandered up stream when this picture was taken.

Hey martin,

How much stroke are those front shocks and how much shaft is visible at ride height?
Interested for my own set up.
Thanks

I'm not honestly sure. They were on the truck when I bought it. They are ProComp ES9000 shocks. The numbers stamped in the tube are 92650 21093

I am assuming that is this:

I could be wrong though. According to that they are only 11" travel. They have about four to five inches of exposed shaft at ride height. If some one else knows better as to what those numbers mean, let me know.

When I got my new hubs and 35 spline outers I got them through ORD, they had pretty good prices on the stuff.

You don't have to change anything else to upgrade to 35's do you? Still the same seals and spindle bearings and such?

Martin

Yes, the spindles and spindle bearings are the same, because it necks down after that. You just need the stub shafts and new locking hubs or drive flanges.

That's what I assumed, but I just wanted someone who has done it to confirm it for me. Thank you.

Martin

Well I just robbed parts from my K30 for this weekend. Might try to order 35 spline stuff here shortly. Who makes the best? Which ones are okay? I am going to stick with lock outs instead of drive slugs.

I use the warn premiums and I like them so far, but I've also heard good things about milemarker. A lot of people say broached spicer hubs are stronger though. If you got the coin the dynatracs hubs are supposedly pretty strong too.

I snapped the same Dana 60 outer yesterday. I guess 35 spline outers are a required upgrade. What are the options?

Martin

Stock spicers are a good option, or the Yukon 4340 are a cheap hardened pair from India or somewhere. Superiors are really nice 4340 with rolled splines, but really expensive. Another good option is Moser, they make them now and they aren't 4340 but they are 4140 with cut splines, which are still a metric fockton stronger than stock.

I would at least get some new spicer life joints too.

My other question is about traction bars. If I can get my front tires to his something, they will climb it. No questions asked. The problems come when my rear tires get involved and the damn thing started wheel hopping like no tomorrow. Any advice on the best set up? I am thinking about just going with an ORD traction bar. Ebke has one, and it seems to work great.

Here are some pictures from this past weekend. I beat the old girl pretty hard. Ended up breaking the same stub shaft at the very end of the day. I also killed the started and the alternator, and my water pump started leaking from the weep hole on the way home. No big deal though.

I don't know why, but I love driving on top of people's tires.

Here is what I was talking about. Once I can get my front tires to hit the ledge, they go right up. Back tires get to the ledge, wheel hop like no tomorrow. My K30 3+3 was a hunk of **** compared to this thing, but would climb these ledges.

My poor front plate really takes a beating.

I left it parked there for quite a while.

Like I said, for some reason, I really enjoy driving up on top of peoples tires.
