WL: Crusty 1985 K20.

Martin and I have much in common as far as our methods of repairing old crusty square body 4x4's...function over form for the win!..:D

If you park that thing anywhere, you park like a jackass...

Lol, love you.

So I have not driven this much of late, as I have three children under four to haul around. Apparently they need car seats and such.

To make matters worse, my Dana 60 hubs were screwed up by me (used too big of a drill bit, per bad advice) which put the Dana 60 install on the back burner. The GM 10 bolt was holding up, but developed some very bad death wobble. So it mostly has just sat.

Today’s beautiful weather got me thinking I should just see what the issue is.

My toe rod end is shot. It is the long tie Rod end. I cobbled it back together to see if that would eliminate the death wobble.

Yes, that is a square REA pole washer under the dust cap to shim out the slack……

Took it for a drive, and that mostly took care of it.

When I returned home, I of course had to park like a jack ass.

I also found where some of my chickens were hiding eggs.

My question is, if I buy a heavy duty tie rod for a GM 10 bolt, is it interchangeable with a Dana 60 if I ever get around to swapping it in?

I need to check part numbers, but I swear I put d60 ends on my 44. In lieu of calling ORD, hopefully someone chimes in to confirm

I seem to remember that the D60 tie rod is shorter. I would have had to cut mine down and retap the threads in one end. I took the opportunity to buy another, so that I could upgrade another truck.

I was thinking that was the case, or something along those lines. I wonder if a guy could buy the short one, and leave the ends screwed out aways, or if the difference would be too much.

There's lots of options it looks like on Rock Auto that are the same or similar. Not sure though. They give you specs on there on most of them.

I asked off-road design the same question when I swapped from my 10 bolt to my Dana 60 because I had bought one of their 1 1/4" heavy duty tie rods from them. Here's the response from Chris at ORD
"The way the knuckles lay out, the tie rod for a GM Dana 60 is 1-3/4” shorter than the 10 bolt one you have. So you’d need to shorten it (like cut/sleeve/weld it) or buy a shorter one."

Measured 46” on d60 vs 48” on 10 bolt.

Ends are almost bottomed out in the 10 bolt, there may be enough there to give an inch on either side.
