Won't Start!

on to the timing chain

Hi all,

Its been raining a few days so we finally had a chance to get out and take all the advice. We double checked everything and feel the distributor and ignition is correct at TDC and wired correctly.

The rotor doesn't spin around. My friend said its the timing chain.

When starting, its just cranking and cranking but not firing.

We took the cap off and saw that the rotor isn't turning. Everything is new.

thanks.

any advice?

Make sure the new distributor matches the one you took out (length, position of the gear, ...) Pull a valve cover off and watch the rockers when you spin the motor...are they moving? Finally, look down the distributor hole and see if the worm gear on the cam rotates when the motor is spun over.

yeah there are different leanth disributers, might have gotten one *slightly* shorter, and it wont engauge.

hopefully you dident chuck the old one...

I DIDNT KNOW THERE ARE TWO DIFFRENT LENGTH HEI DISTRIBUTOR. LEARN SOMTHING NEW EVERY DAY:dunno:

AFAIK there aren't for small block chevs, but Oldsmobile uses a much shorter one. No clue if it will fit, same design essentially though, so perhaps it could.

Highly unlikely but--

Maybe MSD left the roll pin out of the drive gear on the distributor,or it broke??

I wasnt aware they had different distributors either,at least the HEI syle ones before EFI came along...I guess I need to look at more newer trucks...I'm stuck in the points and carbs era...:screwy: :screwy:

One motor we assumed had a broken timing chain or gears because the distributor didnt turn when the engine spun over turned out to have a camshaft that snapped right near the drive gear--that turned a one day job into a three day affair...:frown1:

Hey folks! I've continued wrenching on it and still don't have it running.

To make sure my timing was right, I droped my oil pan and watched the #1 piston. It turns out the timing indicator was incorrect for my balancer! It was off by about 24 degrees. I re-timed it and still no start. I am in the process of replacing the cap and rotor now. It is sooo close to running, but not quite. It will fire on a couple of cylinders and then die.
Any advice would be appreciated:D
