was there a significant even that directly preceded the problem's appearance? for example, extreme temperature change, a serious day of wheeling that could have knocked things around? imo, having a logical starting point, like that, makes a huge difference in how long it takes to hunt something down. narrows your search.
also, while it's a bit of a longshot, have you checked the spark plugs for fouling? i've seen it happen to engines that weren't driven hard enough to seat the rings during break-in. they keep burning too much oil, and of course, coat the plugs with it. that has a really simple solution: pull the plugs and clean the electrodes well (carb cleaner or break cleaner), then stick them back in and run the engine hardER (not actually hard), to get cylinder pressure up for several minutes at a time. 2000 miles is nowhere near the point of no return, in my vast(haha) experience.
(disclaimer: i'm not a mechanic, engineer, etc. just a guy who has had his hands in more than a few vehicles. if your engine explodes, implodes, or enters into a same-sex marriage

, i cannot be held responsible.)
